This weekend will be the first in a series of occultations of Saturn by the Moon this year... The Black Moon.

The year 2014 features 11 occultations of the planet Saturn by the Moon, and there are 23 total for 2014 of every planet except Neptune and Jupiter.
An occultation occurs when one foreground celestial object completely obscures another. Technically, a total solar eclipse is an occultation of the Sun by the Moon, although it’s never referred to as such. The term finds modern usage mainly for the blocking of stars and planets by the Moon. Very occasionally, an asteroid or planet can occult a distant star as well.

And yes, the modern astronomical term “occultation” traces its hoary roots back to the days when astronomy was intertwined with the pseudoscience of astrology. To this day, the term still makes some folks wonder if astronomers are secretly casting horoscopes. Trust us, you’re still on a solid astronomical footing to use the term “occultation.”

www.universetoday.com...

The Moon and Saturn will both reside in the constellation of Libra during closest passage this weekend.
After the moon obscures Saturn it will head towards New on January 30th, while Saturn heads towards opposition.

Not only is this moon called a Black Moon, which will only be visible during the day, but it is also a Super Moon. It will appear much larger in the sky, and tides will be much higher than normal.

Now for the wow factor of what you’re seeing. On Saturday morning, the Moon is just over 371,000 kilometres distant, or a little over a light second away. Saturn is over four thousand times more remote at just over 10.1 astronomical units (AUs) distant, which works out to 1.5 billion kilometres, or over 83 light minutes away. And although the Moon is over a 112 times larger in apparent diameter than Saturn as seen from the Earth, the globe of Saturn is actually over 34 times bigger.

Some say a Black Moon is seen as an omen of change, and hidden truths will be brought to the surface.

Well, it's about time!!

Thanks, Sled! I've been wanting to find more in-depth information on this black moon, but just haven't had the time to research it!

I've noticed through the years that it isn't just the full moon that affects people's personalities, but also the new moon.
Sometimes it is of a very positive nature; sometimes negative. It will be interesting to see what this one brings!

Either way, I expect it to have something of the 'just wow!' effect.

It makes one think .... the Black Moon & the passing over Saturn so soon after the latest State-of-the-Union address to the public

occultation indeed-> omen of change... Øbama just vowed to by-pass Congress to pass laws & policy---- is this the change ?

A "black moon" is the second new moon of the month. You can't see it at all, unless you're Thierry Legault and you go to extreme measures with a telescope (don't try that at home unless you're as leet as Thierry Legault - you'll burn your eye or camera out if you accidentally point too close to the sun). As for the tides, perigean spring tides are not unheard of and the most extreme example of this in recent history occurred in 1912.

It's important to also note that you seem to be conflating the "black moon" with the occultation of Saturn, which was last weekend, not this weekend, and was only visible from the extreme southern portion of South America and Antarctica.

Some say a Black Moon is seen as an omen of change, and hidden truths will be brought to the surface.
Your source says the black moon is basically an artifact of our calendar having less days in February and more days in January and March.

January 2014 is also notable for having two New Moons, an occurrence informally known as a Black Moon. This occurs again this year in March, and February 2014 is devoid of a New Moon. February is the only month that can be “missing a Moon phase” as it’s the only one shorter the synodic period of 29.5 days, in which the Moon returns to like phase.

Apparently we are still paying tribute to the greatness of the Caesars of Rome with our short February, that had two days stolen to add to the 30 days in July and August to make them 31 days.

Why does February have 28 days while the other months have 30 or 31?

July and August were renamed for Caesars of Rome and at the time those months were only 30 days. To honor the greatness of the Caesars, those months were extended to 31 days each and the days were taken from the end of the year, which at the time was February.
So, if February had 30 days (along with July and August), we wouldn't have so many black moons near February. These black moons are largely an artifact of some silly changes made to our calendar long ago, that we are now stuck with.

In other words, saying a black moon is an omen of change seems like superstitious mumbo-jumbo to me. If you make February too short for the moon to complete its 29.5 day cycle, it's going to complete the cycle in an adjacent month.

Hail Caesar

Just like we can have a "blue moon" (a second full moon in a calendar month), we can have a "black moon" (a second new moon in a calendar month). And unless you're a Wiccan/Pagan, there's absolutely no meaning or symbolism tied to this occurence.

Ironically enough, a "black moon" can occur in any month apart from February (because it is so short); but when there's no full moon in February, it is also called a "black moon", and January and March will each have a "blue moon".

To get to the point, they are just nicknames given to moon phases in particular months or seasons, just like we have a "harvest moon", "wet moon", etc.

Great thread thanks for posting. Black Moon just sounds cool.
But I did have a problem with this sentence in your opening post

pseudoscience of astrology.

Don't be so quick to judge Astrology it is a science, the original science humans used for tracking objects in the sky and relating them to the earths spin. There is a reason most people think Astrology is only the little horoscopes you read in the news paper, those are crap and only mislead the public on a subject that has 1000's of years of documented findings and teachings. That's all I wanted to say please look into astrology and astrotheology a little deeper before making a quick remark about a subject that is truly amazing once one falls into that rabbit hole...

Does this have any special meaning for us librans?

Astrologically speaking of course

Here is what it means for Libra. All other signs can be read at this site also.
tribes.tribe.net...

LIBRA

Here is the difficulty to place oneself in relation to the others, to
find the way - behavior - and the true word in each relation. On a
relationship point of view, Libra means harmony. Equilibrium between
oneself and the other(s) must be found. To accept the other without
denying oneself. The notion of the couple - association - has an
important value, which lessons are conciliation, comprehension, and
defense. There will be a lot of problems regarding the couple or the
associations. Though the native needs harmony in his life and wants
to set peace in his relationships - often to the detriment of
himself - the other(s) decides for him. In the same time, the native
can't assert himself and can't live without the other(s). He often
sees the partner (associates) as invaders of his own(private)world
but can't organize his contacts with them. These lacks of self-
confidence, of trust oblige him to let be impressed and to suffer.
Even if one feels unhappy, shirking confrontation is not a good idea.
On the other hand, to protect oneself, one can react with violence,
impulsiveness at an inopportune moment. There is no place for own
will, the others will being stronger. The native will have to endure
trials as other people will not allow him to have a self-expression,
or will oppose to him, even if he deeply knows he is right and the
others are wrong. And yet he must keep self-confidence and simply
accept the others as they are. To give without interested motives, to
be subjected to others desires, to put own desires aside. here are
some of the lessons the native will have to learn before he will have
the opportunity to express his own will. Moreover, Black Moon in
Libra may develop a pathological indecisiveness: the native might
never take a decision. Therefore, he will have to clarify his
positions and to affirm them without ambiguity under pain of creating
awkward situations. As his life's choices are taken at an unconscious
level, the native can't explain them and does not bear to be obliged
to wait and to be patient. He is obliged to sacrifice some values, to
keep just the essential. The air signs tend to mental emotions.
Because she loves peace, the Libra pays attention to be not submerged
by its emotions. With Lilith here, Librans tend to refuge in
indifference and insensitivity. The danger here is to stay in an
ivory tower.

Aries opposite Libra will oblige to solve the problems. The ego has to
find his place between the others. Paralyzed at the beginning, the
native must find the happy medium in his relationship if he wants to
express himself. Every 9 years cycle, an other kind of relationship
starts which may proceed through changes in life, allowing a better
self-expression. So, the ego that was very much debated at the
beginning, will gradually assert itself. Even if he dreams of an "
other world " the native has to live on a day-to-day basis, what he
is offered, and has to always maintain the stability. Equilibrium
between being patient, respecting, co-operating with other people and
his timidity and sensitiveness. The native might have artistic
abilities to be used or develop a job where the spirit of conciliation
is required. Personal expression will always be related to human
relationship.

In the past lives, the soul might have misused the social power she
had and was unjust. On the other hand she might have suffered of
injustice. There is here a trauma bound to equity and social
position. The soul might have chosen between rebellion and submission.

Today the native may be obliged to endure situations which will lead
him to clarify his position, to take sides or to refuse the social
power. He also may have a karmic debt with justice or endure an
injustice that will oblige him to change.

If Lilith is a the very beginning of Libra, the native as to find his
way himself, to learn how to be with the others without underestimate
himself, but in co-operating with them as equals. In these cases,
associations will be of utmost importance. They must not be on a
dominant/dominated basis.

If Lilith is at the very end of Libra, changes occur in life either on
an inner or on an outer mode. Venus position and the house where Black
Moon is, will help to understand the process and the probable
results. There will be renunciations, self-sacrifices the native has
not to live as frustrations, but as necessary detachments for his
evolution.

Keywords: difficulties in unions, associations and meetings - tendency
to refuse social conventions - egoism - magnetism - frustration -
snobbishness - unsatisfied desires - great power on others - health
problems (nephritis) - widowhood
