New "satellite" launches and an "accidental" sinking of a SK ship (or deux) to come...

Underestimate the enemy served always bad to USA and the West in general. It made Hitler's troops march in Paris and almost in Moscow. It made also Pearl Harbor. It made 1/3 China and rest of East Asia to be Japanese colony for decades. Kim's regime (not the funny personality of young Kim) who calls the shots is no better than the above, and has weapons the above could only dream of.
Moreover, we have China-Japan dispute worse than ever after WW2.
What we still don't have is an open confrontation with US armies in the region.
The Asian war already started without shots. If USA is involved, it will become a world war. Even without the other nuclear powers to be included. And they could if they want.

One should have no illusions about a regime that is ready to purge the closest relative of its young leader. Because surely Mr Kim didn't agree on that. What we have in NK is not a young inexperienced unpredictable leader of a nuclear armed 1.1 mln army. What we have is a military junta that is ready for everything, including exchange of the young Mr Kim if necessary, to save its own asses. If needed, they will start a nuclear war to that end. Any "pro-democratic and pro-openness" change will see them out. They do not care of their people obviously but of their own survival as leading class.

Japan has to fear most. Because even if ROK is attacked and half-invaded conventionally it is unlikely the nukes to be thrown on Seoul that should be "reunited". They are for Japan. And even beyond. Depending on how fast the conflict will start and how many countries will include.

To keep illusion of a negotiated solution after that despicable act is naive. Mr Kim doesn't have anymore any say in North Korea and will be kept as a symbol as long as he follows the generals' advises.

Pre-emptive attack on North Korea is a good option for Japan and ROK to get rid of the most terrible weapons before it is too late for them. If the war is inevitable anyway.

So are you insinuating that NK's military is as capable as the USA, Germany & France?

I'm trying to link your post to the actual topic being discussed here (the execution) so I assume you think that it will lead to something bigger? i.e. purging more political ties to attain a greater threshhold on power before trying to take on dare I say it, the world?

Confused here help me out!

Leftists always call themselves "progressive" but the longer they are in power, the more they regress and the more barbaric things get.

And right-wing authoritarian states are any different?

Left-wing / Right Wing makes no difference, it's all dogmatic bollocks.

Everyone's condemning this without knowing any of the facts - maybe, just maybe, the old man was actually corrupt?

Don't get me wrong, I have no love or sympathy for the North Korean regime but trying to apply even a modicum of objectivity and impartiality at this point would not go amiss.

yeah, didn't he have his girlfriend whacked for the same thing? with a bunch of her friends?

The second Kim thinks he could launch a successful strike on the US or Hawaii, you can be sure he will. As of late, a lot of westerners have been warming up to the idea of Putin being a good guy and Jim coming around to a kinder gentler disposition, maybe even peace with the US. Well it ain't gonn'a happen! Kim needs his brains emptied from his head, and his burning body drug through the streets. and I mean that in the nicest way. Putin....... watch him closely. 0bama..... just as close.

well, everything depends on the point of view, and of the actual secret capabilities. If Kim has only 20 bombs or ten times more. None of the parties have nukes at the end of WW2 in Europe May 9, 1945. Do we doubt Hitler would use one-two bombs otherwise when put in the corner? I bet he would. He didn't surrender even when Berlin was cut off the rest of the world. Now NK is pushed hard and it has enough nukes to die in that way. One of the leaders close to the Chinese economic model is killed just as we wake up this morning. What if tomorrow the young Kim follows his uncle, in the name of the motherland and socialism? We deal with psychopaths who are ready of everything.

Seems the world media and also China assume the possibility of a worse case scenario out of the dramatic power struggle in NK.

One of the sources forgot which one exactly, said that Jang Song Thaek was dragged out of a party meeting and arrested. That means to put the military/police force above the ruling party. It is not the way the things are run usually in a communist state where the party is above those institutions and in fact exerts civilian control over them. Even if they (military, police?) ought to arrest him they should not do that demonstratively on a party meeting. Thus they (military) show what could happen to any party member or even to Kim himself if they don't obey the real rulers. Who the real rulers are then? Perhaps the hi-level military commanders. The young Kim has virtually no say after that incident. No he cannot command the arrest of his closest relative, mentor etc. Even if it is said to be so by the state controlled propaganda. He is now a virtual prisoner. Now people who actually made coup d-etat are in control of the nukes and decisions whether or not to strike the South. Remember those people hi -rank generals spent all their life planning for that event. Every other scenario, as for example opening up to the world the way China did, will make out of the generals outdated monsters who at best should retire. They show that scenario isn't gonna happen in North Korea, by striking the highest level they could. They stopped short of killing Kim himself. Perhaps they are very unhappy of the choice of Kim the father to put his youngest son as heir.

just days ago, he was shown being taken from a party event by uniformed guards, and North Korean media carried statements denouncing him as a "traitor to the nation for all ages", ''worse than a dog" and "despicable human scum" who had been planning a military coup.

Prime Minister David Cameron's official spokesman told reporters at a daily Westminster press briefing: "If this is confirmed, it is another example of the extreme brutality of the North Korean regime."

His words echoed the comments of the White House, which also saw Jang's abrupt downfall and execution as evidence of the Pyongyang regime's "extreme brutality".

Good, now they just have to get fatty ultra paranoid enough to murder the rest of them.

If i were among the other highish ranking goons around fatty boy, i would be packing my bags yesterday.

If they can kill the uncle who was apparently the right hand man of the regime, they wouldn't think twice about topping anyone else in the 'inner circle'...or else a pre-emptive cutting the head off the snake might be in order, one of the two.

But let's face it, none of us are going to be even slightly concerned they've murdered one of their own are we?

CNN analysts think it was Kim the one who ordered it, quoting Koreans. I don't believe it. Kim, the powerful man! I stay on my view that it is he who is under threat by generals and not vice versus.

KCNA:

"Jang desperately worked to form a faction within the party by creating illusion about him and winning those weak in faith and flatterers to his side," the statement said.
The statement accused Jang of womanizing, drug use, gambling, eating at expensive restaurants and undergoing medical treatment in a foreign country.
Friday's KCNA report accused Jang of having distributed pornographic pictures among his confidants and having taken at least 4.6 million euros (US $6.3 million) "from his secret coffers and squandered it in 2009 alone."

In fact the man killed with unpronounceable name was closer to Beijing and to any idea of any reform. So we might be sorry it was he who was killed, and not his killers. Especially if they use the momentum and turn on their decades old dream to the South. They may not win the nuclear war but they may well start it.

I never thought a preemptive strike on North Korea's nukes would be a good thing to consider. Now I think it is. Especially if the nukes are more than 20. Those are 20 or many more nuclear blasts anywhere from South Korea to Japan. Will the world ever be the same again if that occur? NK regime showed its cruelty. The regime leaded by Kim Jr already threatened USA and showed target maps. It may not be capable to strike USA but it is terribly capable to vaporize Japanese and South Korean cities. It is a regime that says it would do so. North Korea today has greater explosive power than all Hitler's army in 1939. No matter Kim looks funny fatty kid, he could kill no worse even if he will lose. Hitler also lost the war, and his life. That didn't stop him to start it against stronger powers. I see no reason why the world still negotiate with a regime like NK that presents to the leader maps with US targets on them. Does any civilized country do so? In fact China did it, but semi-officially in the media only.

China wants to attack Japan for unknown reasons. May be China thinks once defeating Japan it will rule all East Asia. Or may be historical revenge. Or may be because Japan is the closest US ally in the region. And if China wants to defeat USA ultimately, it has to take out all of US allies first. Taiwan, Okinawa, South Korea (thru Kim), Japan,...

Japan is however more threatened by North Korea. It is unlikely the 1 bln China with world's largest army to use nuclear weapons against the officially non-nuclear Japan and thus to inflict upon itself the resolve of the rest of the world. But it is very likely the insane regime of North Korea to do exactly that and to justify it by history. While Kim's 1 mln army tries to take as much of South Korea as possible by conventional means, the missiles will fly at Japanese islands destroying city after city. USA will have to respond. And here it is a scenario taking into account the unpredictable, brutal, and frankly, crazy character of the North Korean leadership. They are fit enough to start the bigger world war and to inflict irreparable damage in a first strike on Japan and even on some US bases. Just read what KCNA pours into the web. They want to sound as terrible as they do. As if you read a communist newspaper from 1950s.

Does it mean China wants to bear fruits of war when North Korea is the kamikaze? I don't know. All nightmare scenarios are absurd for healthy mind. But they do exist. Months ago it was China publishing in its newspapers scenarios how to kill Americans.

The change in North Korea signals a major shift away of any course of negotiation. Even if they make gestures as the release of one old American POW. It is not their internal job to kill people who want better relations! It is not China's job to determine it is their internal job!

Of course it will. Cleansing of those who don't agree with mainstream line always precedes major steps outside borders. Remember Hitler's Kristallnacht.

We are not used to estimate in megatons, but soon we will have to. One thing is WW2 armies with their strength and shortcomings. Another thing is one man or a handful of men to have the capability to decide whether to pulverize entire cities. Experts say one only sub carries more explosive than all the used explosives in WW2. Therefore Kim has greater fire power than Hitler, as he smiles schizophrenic. We don't know how many warheads the North's regime has. 10 years ago they were estimated at 12. May be now are anywhere to 30 and beyond. NK tested 1 kt ignition device for H-bomb. Ad you just have the Hydrogen everywhere, you don't have to centrifuge it. Did they master it? I don't know. But KCNA threatens seas of fire on US territory. So perhaps they got it somehow. The world doesn't have the right to underestimate such regime. The Chinese double standard in regard to North Korea is the worst service to humanity China ever did. Because China knows who to put to strike first. And that one is NK. My view of China's "peaceful" mission failed into pieces the day Chinese newspapers published the target maps of USA. So you have one big power and one "small" power with enough missiles how they made them, those missiles on parades) to hit anywhere in the East Asia. Of course it matters who holds the red button. Is this...kid or someone else. We are not going to play e-game with that...kid. They he, whoever) just showed no mercy towards their own ranks in their own hailed communist party structure! Pornography accusations! F. you coward bastards.

have we ever experienced a nuclear war? No!

When the first nuke explodes, or more than one, it will paralyze the world in fear to think who is the next one. End of any deterrent. The rule of preemptive strike will reign. People will run into shelters in countries that have them (USA and Russia for sure).

It is easy to say, USA have so many thousands of nukes, what are several dozen North Korean that can't even reach us! Those are several dozen (or as many as they are) cities destroyed in South and Japan! Also the great dragon is sitting there waiting what happens next (China). Will USA throw asymmetrical number of bombs on NK? Unlikely. More likely a giant Asian war to erupt, with Japan going nuclear in a matter of weeks not months. Fukushima proved they have enough plutonium to kill everyone and themselves.

We never lived in such a nightmare scenario! Words are not enough. Videos of nuclear tests are not enough. The world will never be the same! Besides, other countries that have old enmities will use the occasion to fix them may be using more "civilized" weapons.

Where will Russia side? I don't think Russia is so insane to side with North Korea not even China in such an Asian nuclear war. Russia will not get involved on the Chinese side in what appears to be choreographed first strike by Kim followed by Chinese invasion of East Asia.

And China actually may turn on Europe and Russia at one moment. China will never invade USA crossing the ocean. It may missile-strike USA and getting bombed itself, but it will never invade US territory. Unless USA is completely cut off deterrent and surrenders. Instead, Russia is next door to China, very easy to be invaded because of long territory with several railroads only. Once Chinese massive troops pour into the border and cut transport lines, Russia will have to either nuke its own invaded cities or look for another solution. It is a matter of days. Putin's last mega drill was in the Far East next to the Chinese border. Don't say impossible. Russia in its history lost one Asian war to a power considered to be non significant at the time - Japan 1905.

Next comes Europe. Perhaps old alliances in Europe including Russia before WW1 should be reviewed. Perhaps Russia and America should realize they have much more in common than contrary to each other. It will be pity for the civilized world if the heir of the nuclear ash is a completely new power, while the old ones destroy each other in premeditated mega scenario. May be not even China but another one will climb atop of the NWO.

According to some reports, Jong-un was described by classmates as a shy child who was awkward with girls, indifferent to political issues but distinguished himself in sports, and had a fascination with the American National Basketball Association and Michael Jordan. One friend claimed that he had been shown pictures of Pak-un with Kobe Bryant and Toni Kukoč taken at an unknown location
