This little fella is called the Breviceps macrops, also known as the Desert Rain Frog. The adorable, high-frequency sound that it's making is caused by the inflation of its body. I'm guessing this war cry is a nice little defense mechanism to ward off potential predators.

Care to share any other surprisingly unique animal-related videos?

I'm not sure, but it got the dog's attention.

It's cute as amphibians go, I guess.

Sounds like a doggy chew toy
Don't tell him I said that. I expect the vocalizations are for mating, that is usually the purpose. Making noise in general just calls attention to yourself, not a good plan when dealing with predators.

You kinda took away the element of surprise, since the thread title caused me to expect it to be cute.

It's definitely different. If I had just walked up on it in the wild, I probably wouldn't have thought it was a frog. (not sure what I would have actually thought it was, but I'm pretty sure it would've been something other than a frog.)

I think it sounds like a dog's squeaky chew toy. If he ever sees a dog, and still wants to continue living, he should probably shut up until the dog is a safe distance away.
