(CNN) -- James Gandolfini, who gained fame playing a memorable mafia boss on HBO's "The Sopranos" by giving the role a contemporary twist of visiting a therapist for middle-age anxieties, died after suffering a possible heart attack in Italy, an HBO spokeswoman and the actor's managers said Wednesday.

I loved this show and thought he was a great actor.

It has now been confirmed that james gandolfini has died at the age of 51 in italy while on holidays

He was best known for playing Tony Soprano on the hbo hit series "The Sopranos".

Reports are still sketchy with some saying he died of a heart attack while others say it was a stroke.

hbo has confirmed his death.
