Sad loss, both for Venezuela in the shorter term and in the long run the wider world.....A fact that may only become apparent to many with the benefit of considerable hindsight.

RIP Hugo Chavez.

Ever since Chavez became president in 1999, Venezuelan cities have become hellholes in which murder rates have more than quadrupled. At 233 per 100,000, or one murder every 90 minutes, the rate in Caracas now tops that of every war zone in the world, according to an official National Statistics Institute study released Wednesday.

In fact, crime is the defining fact of life in today's Venezuela. About 96% of all murder victims are poor and lower-middle class, the very people Chavez claims to represent. By contrast, the murder rate in cartel-haunted Juarez, Mexico, is 133 per 100,000, with Mexico's overall rate 8 per 100,000, about the same as Wichita, Kan. Colombia, fighting a narcoterror war since 1964, has an overall rate of 37 per 100,000, slightly higher than Baltimore at 36.9. The overall U.S. rate is 5.4.

Make no mistake, a murder rate like Caracas' is a crime against humanity. The absence of personal security renders all other human rights moot. By coincidence, that's just what Chavez seeks to eliminate as he turns his country into a Cuba-style socialist state. Instead of Castroite firing squads or Stalinesque gulags, Chavez outsources the dirty work of socialism to criminals while throwing dissidents in jail and threatening to censor newspapers.

no leader is a saint not a single one.

I never even used the word.

I merely said that with hindsight we will probably realize there was real substance to Hugo Chavez (whether we agree with him or not).....I do not feel that posterity will look quite so kindly on many of his contemporaries (the last several US Presidents or British Prime Ministers for example).

He did some very good things, things I would hope my government would do, too. (But they are way too neo-con.)

Chavez was not Marxist he was a Bolivarianist. Revolution is usually violent and didn't end just because Chavez became President. Not all, not even most, Capitalists fled Venezuela in 1998 when Chavez was elected to his first term and previous to his first election there was an extreme amount of violence, it was just acceptable to the US and the rest of the western world because the violence was in their favor as opposed to the favor of the destitute, uneducated, ignored and tossed aside, considered lucky if they were hired at slave wages, people of Venezuela. All because the leaders previous to Chavez played nicely with the Global Elite ie, the oil cartels, the IMF, the US.

I held high respect for this individual.

May he rest in peace.

I read this morning that Chavez amassed a personal fortune in the proximity of $2 billion during his reign as chief dictator. All from plundering from the people of Venezuela. Glad Sean Penn was proud to call that thief his friend.

Criminal Justice International Associates (CJIA), a risk assessment and global analysis firm in Miami, estimated in a recent report that the Chávez Frías family in Venezuela has “amassed a fortune” similar to that of the Castro brothers in Cuba.

According to Jerry Brewer, president of CJIA, “the personal fortune of the Castro brothers has been estimated at a combined value of around $2 billion.”

“The Chávez Frías family in Venezuela has amassed a fortune of a similar scale since the arrival of Chávez to the presidency in 1999,” said Brewer in an analysis published in their website.

Brewer said that Cuba is receiving about $5 billion per year from the Venezuelan treasury and in oil shipments and other resources.

“We believe that organized bolivarian criminal groups within the Chávez administration have subtracted around $100 billion out of the nearly $1 trillion in oil income made by PDVSA since 1999.”

In Venezuela die every day 50 people on hands of organized crime. Kids and Teenagers are on the death list every day there. I am not happy over the death of this man but its cynical that the world stands still when he dies.
