I don't think an island would be the best place to live if the S were to HTF. Sea levels are rising, for one, and on the other hand, there is only so much wood available for building and other neccesary tools would be unavailable if a situation were to arise where travelling to the mainland would be impossible. Also, it would not be as easy to defend a small island if you needed to. I'll stick to bugging out deep in the woods if and when the need makes itself known..already have a cabin with a generator and 3 solar panels and running water pumped from a nearby lake.

And you better plan on building a decent sized water desalination plant.

That would be a pretty neet thing. I would so take part in that if it wouldn't turn into another Waco. But unfortunatly TPTB don't like free thinking people who can live with out a difinitive authority figure who can tax the heck out of them.

There are millions of people who disapear with out a trace every year around the world, maybe some of them are already on some secret Island somewhere co-existing peacefuly in a mutualy benificial manner. Sonds too good to be true. But if you do get the right people together in the right conditions, I do believe it's possible. But secrecy would have to be paramount.

But seriously - Self sufficiency is the way forward
I lived on an Island and have done that many years ago - though we did not own the Island just land and buildings

Call it Sparta. So then when inhabitants welcome others, they can say "THIS IS SPARTA!" and have the optional choice of kicking them down the hole thingy to see the sights if they want. [it'll have stairs to get back up, don't want to violate human rights..]

And we will need a FLAG. Everyone knows you can't claim a country without a FLAG.

There was an underground bunker in Germany last year if I remember correctly that could house a few hundred as it stored munitions prior to being sold off.
Quick get in there before China take if off of America for 'unpaid debts'.
And Bagsy ( seeing as people are putting on for property on the island) I'll put first dibs on the dirt covering the island down to 20 meters, the air over and above 6 meters and the sea out to about 20 meters.After that anyone can have whats left.
So anyone , Lord or pion will have to pay me taxes to ( reasonable taxation of course) to walk on the land, to work on the land, to build over said height and to land any boats or go swimming.
Air to breathe is free of course.
