I don't understand why the people would turn on him like they did if he were really doing what you listed. Is it ignorance about how the rest of the world really works and expecting even more then they were given? I'm not sure I totally buy the whole list as factual.

All Americans so much in love with Socialism seriously need to get out and travel. Libya is a ****-hole, there are few places in the world more poor, barren and spirit-less, color-less, hopeless.

Before Communism fell in Eastern Europe, one could have also compiled a list much like this one.

1.) Hospitals and medical care was free
2.) A young couple received money for furniture and baby supplies from the Government for the first two children born, and the mother could stay home with the child for the first two or three years.
3.) Everybody had a job and there was almost no homelessness.
4.) Vacations and medical leave were fully paid for.
5.) All the land belonged to all the people

I'm probably missing some, but these are the main ones I can think of right now. Let me put these five into perspective for you.

1.) Medical care was atrocious. You were lucky to come out of the hospital alive.
2.) Hmmm.... not sure what the negatives are on that one...other than the fact that the money had to be taken from others so that it can be given to you. It's a form of welfare, and the reason the Communists supported people in having children was because they wanted to increase the Communist population and later take over the world.
3.) The job you had was not the job you necessarily liked. I mean... you COULDN'T not work. If you were fired (which was unusual no matter how badly you performed said job) you had to find another job ASAP or one would be assigned to you. If you didn't want to work, you'd end up in jail. Also, having your own business was a huge challenge.
4.) Vacations were free as long as you vacationed in Cuba, Russia, China, Vietnam, or some other Communist country where they were starving. Traveling to Western countries was forbidden. If you received permission to travel to a Western country, you had to leave behind one of your kids or your wife to ensure you would return back to your own country.
5.) Yeah.. everyone owned all the land equally, but that meant you didn't own any land privately. If you owned fields or parts of a forest, or anything more than what your house was standing on, it was taken away and given to "the people". To add insult to injury the Government would then send you to work in those fields for the people, but your earnings wouldn't really reflect your hard work.

So.... to conclude this short list, it may sound great on the surface, but when you get into the details you start wondering if all those awesomeriffic benefits are worth the crappy lifestyle you're forced to live. Sure..you have all these benefits, but keep in mind you have to worry every day whether someone turns you in to the KGB, or if you suddenly disappear for saying a simple phrase like "Communism sucks". You have to stand in line to buy a loaf of bread or toilet paper, and you see bananas or oranges once a year. Everyone drives the same crappy car, and you can say good bye to freedom of religion.

The living standards of Libyans have improved significantly since the 1970s, ranking the country among the highest in Africa. Urbanization, developmental projects, and high oil revenues have enabled the Libyan government to elevate its people's living standards. The social and economic status of women and children has particularly improved. Various subsidized or free services (health, education, housing, and basic foodstuffs) have ensured basic necessities. The low percentage of people without access to safe water (3 percent), health services (0 percent) and sanitation (2 percent), and a relatively high life expectancy (70.2 years) in 1998 indicate the improved living standards. Adequate health care and subsidized foodstuffs have sharply reduced infant mortality, from 105 per 1,000 live births in 1970 to 20 per 1,000 live births in 1998. The government also subsidizes education, which is compulsory and free between the ages of 6 and 15. The expansion of educational facilities has elevated the literacy rate (78.1 in 1998). There are universities in Tripoli, Benghazi, Marsa el-Brega, Misurata, Sebha, and Tobruq. Despite its successes, the educational system has failed to train adequate numbers of professionals, resulting in Libya's dependency on foreign teachers, doctors, and scientists.

Remember Lybia is mostly desert, yet almost everyone has access to clean drinking water.

What a sh!t hole...

Predator0187 Theory and Conspiracies:
1. There is no electricity bill in Libya; electricity is free for all its citizens.
("And so are there nuclear weapons of mass destruction!")

2. There is no interest on loans, banks in Libya are state-owned and loans given to all its citizens at zero percent interest by law.
("But if you don't pay your loans in Libya, you will either get your hands chopped off, stoned to death, executed terrorism style, killing either you or your family till the loan gets paid!")'
')
3. Having a home [is] considered a human right in Libya.
("That is why most are living in the street protesting, against there governments!")

4. All newlyweds in Libya receive $60,000 dinar (U.S.$50,000) by the government to buy their first apartment so to help start up the family.
("Paid full in Monopoly Money to start at "Go" and once the Dice made of Stone Rolls, from there, try to purchase the Rail Road express to leave Libya!")

5. Education and medical treatments are free in Libya. Before Gaddafi only 25 percent of Libyans were literate. Today, the figure is 83 percent.
("Its a fast moving country and becoming a metropolitan city, of some kind of modern day "Flintstones city" to be exact! Just a phew month's after Gaddafi's death, mysteriously education levels rose higher and now more people can read and write, they are fast becoming scholars! roll Oh, and medical aid on foreign attackers is free!")

6. Should Libyans want to take up [a] farming career, they would receive farming land, a farm house, equipment, seeds and livestock to kickstart their farms are all for free.
("Libyans can become Amish Mennonites too! In the desert you can plant several different cactus species and Thorn Acacia trees! And farm and raise animals such as; snakes, scorpions, vultures and goats!")

7. If Libyans cannot find the education or medical facilities they need, the government funds them to go abroad, for it is not only paid for, but they get a U.S.$2,300/month for accommodation and car allowance.
("That's better than the United States education and healthcare plan, F@#$k Obamacare! For example: After landing abroad in the U.S. they get Taxi privileges! Yes that's right, driving taxi's all over the city spending all that Monopoly Money! And some becoming Yale students, were they get initiated into the Skull & Boners, to become a well educated 33rd Degree Libyan!")
('

8. If a Libyan buys a car, the government subsidizes 50 percent of the price.
("Taxi's get ripped in half!")

9. The price of petrol in Libya is $0.14 per liter.
("Petroleum Jelly is almost as close as free! That means they can afford tons of it. Vaseline is being used more frequent over there, because they are getting F@#$ked !") '
'
10. Libya has no external debt and its reserves amounting to $150 billion are now frozen globally.
(The Rothschild's and the Parker Brothers are pissed off, at the Libyans! '
' There money has been frozen!) ('
')
11. If a Libyan is unable to get employment after graduation the state would pay the average salary of the profession, as if he or she is employed, until employment is found.
(Guessing that most Libyans do not enjoy being Amish Mennonites, the governments are willing to thaw a phew frozen funds under the hot Eastern Sun, for the unemployed, educated, people!)

12. A portion of every Libyan oil sale is credited directly to the bank accounts of all Libyan citizens.
(Since petrol is almost free, no wonder they are still in poverty! $0.14cents and the person receives about 1 percent, into there accounts, hmmm? I know, BUY MORE VASELINE!)'

13. A mother who gives birth to a child receives U.S.$5,000.
("Want more Monopoly, more Children") ('
')
14. 40 loaves of bread in Libya costs $0.15.
("That's more expensive than petrol.") '
'
15. 25 percent of Libyans have a university degree.
("S$!T, I thought Gaddafi's death was going to fix that?") '
'
16. Gaddafi carried out the world's largest irrigation project, known as the Great Man-made River project, to make water readily available throughout the desert country.'
