Thank you Scotty! Star Trek IV

Surmet has the formula. It works!

Transparent Aluminium has bulletproof armor characteristics !

I guess if i wanted to build a brand new Space Shuttle this would be my first choice for
windows on the front and side. If i fly through the solar system and hit a small asteroid
then it would just bounce off. Hmmm........

I could maybe make the entire spacecraft out of injection molded AlON from Surmet.
Tweak the formula so it is not all transparent.
Start with a starfleet shuttlecraft and then just scale it up.

nice, I knew about see-through aluminium created via nanotech a while back but bulletproof? does it retain its light weight properties aswell? they banned troops from using dragonskin but this is a viable step to improve from metal plates.

Didn't Scotty already give Flexicorp this information back in 1984?

Cool find. It will not hold against meteoroids that usually have enormous velocity, but it might work in military vehicles.

Aluminum oxynitride has been around for at least 6 years now, heres some articles :

That's it!

It sure took them long enough to figure out the dynamics of the matrix!!!

It's 2011 !!!! I think they were dragging their feet.

Nothing new under the sun.

And everything we have has been rooted in star trek as far as tech.

First off, the transparent aluminum is very cool. I 'm blown away.

Secondly, JibbyJedi, you are a fan amongst fans to have been able to go straight to that. Awesome post.

As the world moves forward Trek just gets better and better.

No... use the shuttlecraft that is in your avatar image, if you want to get off the ground. And btw, there probably is no debris to hit in hyperspace.

Do you see that the sport model is injection molded? I think this transparent aluminium
fell into our laps around July 1947 Roswell, NM.

I'll get it off the ground with a Gravity Wave Caterpillar Drive System.
I still need to work on the Life Support System.

If i'm mining the platinum in the asteroid belt, i may bump into a few small asteroids.

I have only one question...Where do I go to buy this stuff?

I want some and I want it now!

When I worked at Kriegerwatch we were researching transparent aluminum for use as a watch case.
The material was very strong. But it was also brittle.
We dropped a sample and it chipped an edge.

It was see through and reminded me of a synthetic sapphire crystal.

You should stop by the Surmet website. They are making domes.
It's perfect for a new shuttle craft.

It looks amazing but I wonder if it will perform as well in the extreme temperatures of space I thought aluminum gets very brittle at temperatures that low. If it were injection molded I would think the heat of re-entry would approach that of it's melting point?

The new space shuttle won't come blazing through the atmosphere like old one.

We will slow down and make a gentle descent.

It should be pretty cool.

I want my Army of WE The People to wear IronMan armor made of this stuff so we can take back our country!

Thats what We need. High technology in The Peoples hands to combat the armies and minions of the corrupt government when they try to stop us. In the past taking over the gov by force was silly because they had the Big Guns and The Stooges oh.. er.. U.S. Military to hold us back. Technology like this in the Right Hands, The Peoples, would be a good start.

Lets see if we can get Tony Stark on the line.

But he may not want it to be transparent.

If they could add an electrically-switchable polarizing function to that aluminum, to switch between opaque and transparent... you might have the window panels Bob Lazar described being in the hull-dome of the alien Sport Model.

This isn't 'transparent aluminum' any more than quartz is 'transparent silicon.' It is a ceramic that is similar to aluminum oxide [sapphire]. This particular material has been around for a while.
In the movie, the molecules shown on screen when the 'secret formula' was provided were just organics that looked neat and there was no aluminum in them, either. Scotty was apparently spending too much time with ethanol, again.
