America and Americans - What exactly are we good at? What makes us "the best"?

Quick question that has been bothering me for awhile now.

As I watch nasa being dismantled and ripped apart, as I watch legislation trying to be passed to retard the scientific process even more, I wonder...What are we good at now

What is the vision? In the 60s, it was going into space...in the 90s, it was all about pushing the internet to be the medium that connects the globe, but where is our vision now?

Robotics are now gone to the far east for superiority
Physics is the domain of europe
Medicine is also becoming a european breakthrough area
Serious money is now being pushed into places like bollywood and other foreign entertainment industries (not to mention the massive rise in japanese entertainment)

What is our place in this new world? Are we becoming redundant? Have we lost the will to strive for great things? Do we even have the right to call ourselves the best at anything anymore (beyond military, but lets be honest...that is not a point of pride...just because someone carries the largest stick doesn't mean he is the best person to know).

So...this is actually -not- an america bashing thread...its actually a where do we go, what can we do type thread. I love the global community, but I sit currently in America, and I don't like this sunk ship feeling.

What national projects should we unify and push for? or should we simply give up and give the greatness name to some other nation that will step up and lead the new century

One way to help is to start teaching advanced math to kindergarten and never stop teaching it throughout elementary, middle and high school.

Ban school boards.

Give the power over schools back to the states.

Keep the federal government out of local education

1.) Outsourcing
2.) Corporate Greed
3.) Fiscal Mismanagement
4.) Under production
5.) Over production of Fast food
6.) Burying our heads in our favorite BOOBTUBE programing instead of seriously looking at the real world issues of our day.

I could go on.

But anybody who reads this thread and cries about the Fall of the US who then turns right around and buys crap made elsewhere at places like Wal-Mart [who turned a nearly 380 Billion profit last year doing so] should take a good hard long look in the mirror. Then after reality comes crashing in should sit down and see how they voted over the past 20 years or so. [IF THEY VOTED AT ALL]

What made us "the best"?

Look in the mirror America that's what!

i always admired you Americans for being just ahead in regards to psychology. the newest and best ideas on self development mostly comes from your way.

i think this happened ever since many psychologists who were at the pulse of a holistic understanding and analysing the human situation, and incorporating new ideas that came from the east, migrated to America from Germany and founded the ‘gestalt’ movement. although gestalt is not taught at universities as such, it now is part of every psychological and even philosophical insight.

I think America still ranks first in that domain. even in Buddhism i have heard and noticed this influence.

Good question !! Well I don't know anymore. We have become good at Big Business Running Our Elected Officials and Calling The Shots In The Country !! As an American I think Our Govt is The Best at Lying To The American People !!

That math things not a bad idea, theres a thing called kumon, which is voluntary for your kids and the parents have to enforce it but you basically can make your kids great at math, better than the average man, even before they're 10 years old, its what the Japanese kids do, that's why they grow up to be human calculators.

So the US should do that with all their kids, because that's what you want to do if you want to stay as a superpower, its all about education, especially maths, It's what physics, engineering, and accounting is based on.

So what I'm trying to say is, the US Will be fine, just forget about sports and that, and force all your kids into a better education.

Bottom-line:

your post is right on the money. so what do we do? how do we turn it around? I'll tell you how; get rid of the GOP. I'm serious. they are not about America. they couldn't give a flying fruck about Mr & Mrs Middle America. they serve their corporate /big oil & banker masters. break the GOP's strangle hold on America and you will see this country return to prosperity. you will see much needed infrastucture replaced & created, mind tingling innovations in education, a return to a new & improved manufacturing here in America, medical breakthroughs based on much needed research; you will see much of the good old days but in a new and better light. it's actually pretty easy IMHO. if America would wake up and shut down the greed driven GOP things will change. our attitude will change. we will once again know what purpose is. ............
