So why would any state risk keeping such a secret for such a long time? They haven't said anything for 50 years which is bad enough, what then when another 10 or 20 years passes. How about a century passing - can you imagine a country keeping this hidden for a hundred years and what damage it would do to that political ecosystem? The President's Office would be of less value than the sole of your shoe. Such a secret would be more threatening to national security than the existence of an alien presence.
How do we reconcile this with the belief that there actually is a secret? In other words, what are 'they' expecting to gain from keeping it hidden?

It would shatter any trust societies have of their governments or authorities; suspicion and conspiracy would dominate people's thoughts. You wouldn't believe anything any official would tell you - why would you? They've been lying to you for decades on the single most important matter in human history. The President's Office would be of less value than the sole of your shoe. Such a secret would be more threatening to national security than the existence of an alien presence.
