(Reuters) - A British minister said on Wednesday that more than a quarter of the world's population was expected to watch television broadcasts of this month's royal wedding between Prince William and Kate Middleton.

www.reuters.com...

Wow!

So with all that is going on in the world today, about 29% of ALL the planet's inhabitants plan to watch this? How many millions will actually be setting their alarms to wake them in the middle of the night to stare at an image of two people getting married, whom they do not know personally, all because they are royalty?

Can somebody PLEASE explain this to me? I am simply stunned and am seriously having problems processing this.

I would rather have the worse movie in the world on my tv than a sh***y wedding bout a Prince who along with his family swindled and enslaved many people throughout the centuries and his bride to be

These news stories are funny.

Everyone with a TV is bound to watch something at some point.

Let's all agree that billions of people will watch stuff!

"Excellent, we have 2 billion idiots watching this marriage, lets drop a nuke on some Arab country."

Okay okay that was highly exaggerated (
) but I'm expecting something pretty big to happen on that day, and not necessarily against the wedding itself, but somewhere else in the world. It's a great diversion don't you think?

I would rather watch the biggest loser, the view, and american idol... for a whole day

No idea where they get those numbers from, but I would be surprised if even 500 million view it

I cant understand it, i took my kids up to london the other week for the first time, i took them to buck palace and theres was literally hundreds of tourist there to see nothing in particular! I can only conclude that the royal family are witchs and warlocks of the higher order and have cast a spell on the ordinary people of the earth.
Seriously though i dont understand it, it cant be a case of wanting something your country hasnt got because theyre are many other royal familys around the world and they dont get this coverage.

Sorry. I'm not one of those people and I live in the UK. I'm glad I've got the Friday off but I have much more important things to do instead of watching a commercialised marriage.
I still don't understand why we have the hierarchy of Queens and Kings.

It's all a load of pish posh

The people that are looking forward to watching us, are the same ones that keep our society from advancing. Unless you are actually attending then you are nothing but a pawn to these people. Wake up!

there were less people around when diana was married but i checked for comparsion to see if interest has gone up or down.

en.wikipedia.org...

750 million watched diana/charles.

www.nationmaster.com...&date=1981

world population back then according to the link above was 4,494,234,902.97

the population has increased by 3 billion since then. is anybody good at working out the percentage? to see if there is less interest per person or more?

whos to say they are not playing up the figure for this wedding anyway. we only have their word for it.

I will probably watch some of it.

It will be a big part of our history, think of how important this footage may come in generations ahead.

He is a future king, you never know he could do something amazingly great for mankind, though he could do something rather stupid, either way it’s there and documented for generations to come.

People get excited over weddings of their close friends and family, but here we have the marriage of the future King of England. Most people never have the opportunity to watch this sort of things in their whole lifetime

Just under a 1/4 of the world watched Diana get married, with this one they are expected just under 1/3 of the population. correct me if I'm wrong.

I'm just about as far away in the world as you can get to the UK, and the local expat hangout here is having a special Royal wedding party. I think it's more of a reason for a good get together and a few drinks, than anybody really gives a hoot. Most expats I speak to are well aware of what's going on in the world and left the UK simply because it was no longer the country they used to love.
