Do certain planetary allignments cause earthquakes(a scientific approach)

A good science experiment is one that is testable and its results are reproducable. There are theories when planets allign with the earth and sun, they produce earthquakes. This post here abovetopsecret.com... has a link in it and the guy says he is predicting a major earthquake based on earths allignments on the 6th of April. I researched the top 5 most powerful earthquakes and the planets allignments on those days. For this post I will be doing the top 10 quakes and allignments. My results will be available within 30 minutes. The reason I am posting an incomplete post right now is because i already hit enter and i do not want to leave it blank. I will edit this post when my data is complete.

Since Venus only had 1 allignment for the 10 earthquakes i will not be posting pics of earth venus sun alignments.

So now that we have these 10 alignments with earth sun and jupiter i went to this website here.brainyhistory.com... and looked up the dates. I looked at events a week prior and a week after the dates shown on the pictures to see if any significant earthquakes occured during those alignments.

-September 28, 2010 An 4.5 magnitude earthquake strikes offshore of Oleron, France; no casualties are reported

-February 27 2010 A tsunami warning went into effect for Chile and Peru after an 8.8 magnitude earthquake hits near Conception, Chile

August 12, 2009 No incedents for week prior, of, or after

January 18, 2009 No incedents for week prior, of, or after

July 6, 2008 No incedents for week prior, of, or after (8.0 eq on May 8. This is out of my week parameters but worth noting)

December 18, 2008 No incedents for week prior, of, or after

June 6, 2007 No incedents for week prior, of, or after

November 15, 2006 No incedents for week prior, of, or after

May 3, 2006 No incedents for week prior, of, or after (6.3 eq on the 23. This is out of my week parameters but worth noting)

October 21, 2005 No incedents for week prior, of, or after (Eq.magnitude not listed on the 8. This is out of my week parameters but worth noting)

The only major earthquake that occured during one of these earth jupiter sun allignments was the Chile earthquake. Although there were a couple of times an earthquake hit within a month of one of these alignments, I do not think it was caused by the alignment.

I know this is a small sample size of data, but it is a starting point. As of now I do not see any relationship between planetary alignments and earthquakes.

AFAIK, it was proven a while ago that celestial bodies do not cause earthquakes.

If they did, the Moon should've destroyed the Earth many total solar eclipses ago, right?

It seems like there are still alot of people out there that believe celestial bodies do cause earthquakes since they are talking about alignments and predicting destruction based on these alignments. That is why I did this to show there is really no relationship between the two.

Pretty much what you'd expect. Look at the tides, the movement of the ocean is one indicator of external gravitational pulls on the Earth.

The planetary alignments don't seem to have much effect on the tides compared to the moon, do they? The only alignments of significance gravitationally are between the Earth, moon and sun:

the combined gravitational effect of all the planets together is much less than the effect of the Sun or the Moon on the Earth. Depending on how strictly you want to define "alignment", the inner six planets are aligned every fifty to a hundred years or so. While unusual, such alignments have happened in the past without any consequences. The planets are simply too far away to have an effect on anything here on Earth - except our imaginations.

Actually there is more tug on the earth when we have a full moon, being on the opposite side of the earth than the sun. The earth at the equator actually expands by nearly 10 inches due to these opposing tugs, most prevalent during the latest supermoon. This is a known fact I posted in another thread weeks ago with links, if you must I can search for the references.

In short, nice thread idea, as celestial forces have a much greater effect on plate tectonics of our live planet than what people that site the miniscule HAARP ridiculousness. Of course the earth's core rotating around inside of the liquid mantle has more to do with our plate tectonics.

The tug of celestial bodies is real, its what is creating volcanism on the moon Io of Jupiter, among other moons that shouldn't be as warm as they are by their distance from the sun.

Hi, just a noobie here. A friend just posted a link to this item. I thought you might be interested in my recent work looking at "planetary alignments" by "Thebarcaroller". He uses SimSolar software to create planetary alignment charts and earthquake predictions, but unfortunately his charts are not to scale, so his alignments are not correct. A have produced 3 Youtube videos looking at these alignments, plus a 4th "brief guide to using SimSolar".

Because of the massive scale of the solar system, it is difficult to use charts like these accurately. Allowing a one degree tolerance (2 degs by default in SimSolar), 1 deg at a distance of 150 million Km from the sun to earth gives a zone 2.6 million km wide! You could fit 206 earths into that 1 degree zone.

(1 degree tan = 0.0174 x 150 million km = 2.618 million km)

I just had a look at the site Solarsystemscope. This is a great resource, but may I recommend tools such as SimSolar (as per my videos) as SimSolar provides much more accuracy when the "Set to scale" options are used.

The issue of alignments and earthquakes has been studied by many academics with the result that the Moon may be associated with a few rare types of low intensity earthquakes.

You might want to be begin your research by looking at the work that has already been done on the subject.
