AUSTRALIA was protecting itself from any future threat of a ballistic missile attack by participating in the US' so-called Son of Star Wars missile defence scheme, Defence Minister Robert Hill said today.

Senator Hill signed a 25-year agreement in Washington to support research into the missile shield and agreed on a major upgrade of three Australian defence force bases for future joint training with the US.
