SKorean official: North Korea fires artillery toward waters off its west coast

Published August 09, 2010
| Associated Press

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — South Korea's Defense Ministry says that North Korea has fired artillery into the waters off its west coast.

A Defense Ministry official says the rounds were fired on Monday into the sea off the North's coast, but gave no further details, including how many shells were fired, and how close the firing was to the two Koreas' disputed sea border.

The official spoke on condition of anonymity citing department policy.

The firing came amid high tension over the sinking of a South Korean warship blamed on North Korea in March, and recent military exercises by South Korea and the U.S.

THIS IS A BREAKING NEWS UPDATE. Check back soon for further info

Here is another link below, with more info.... They fired into the waters near the line where they have had the dispute. There were war games from South Korea and I think some U.S. involvement.....it was the last day of the exercise. Kim Jung Il had said that if the exercises went as scheduled, he would do something....and didn't until now. I think he just wanted to get a couple of shots in before the exercise ended to save face.

Has this anything to do with the bus exploding in Seoul do you think?

Just seems weird that there are 2 big stories in the same day.

Could be.....they are still investigating. I think though, that "Lil Kim" is just trying to say "I told you so"....he had to follow through with his threat to save face. I really don't think they want to go to war, as that country is in deep poverty.......then again.... Kim Jung Il is nuts and might want to leave a "Legacy" as he is about to hand power over to his son.!

NKorea fires artillery off west coast

NKorea fires artillery off west coast

By HYUNG-JIN KIM
Associated Press Writer

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) -- North Korea fired about 110 rounds of artillery Monday near its disputed sea border with South Korea, the South's military said, amid high tension over the deadly sinking of a South Korean warship blamed on North Korea.

The firing came shortly after South Korea ended five-day naval drills off the west coast that the North called a rehearsal for an invasion, vowing to retaliate.

All the artillery shells harmlessly landed into the North's waters and caused no damage to the South, a South Korean Joint Chief of Staff officer said on condition of anonymity, citing department policy.

South Korea considered the firing to be part of a military drill by North Korea but still bolstered its military readiness against further provocation, the officer said. The South also warned Pyongyang over the firing by naval radio, he said.

"This was their way of saying 'We'll respond to military drills with military drills,'" said Yang Moo-jin, a professor at Seoul's University of North Korean studies.

I think the professor in the article hit the nail on the head.

A bit of muscle-flexing on both sides of the border at the moment.

I'm in Thailand and have access to many different Asian networks on my TV. It did happen and is being reported extensively on many of the channels - especially South Korean TV.

How do you think I got to know about the bus explosion in Seoul?

I wish it were The Onion though - at least it'd be funny.

TheBloodRed didn't mark who they were responding to and so I thought it was to the OP's story not the YouTube comedy clip.

OP's story is real, North Korea moon capture isn't

Yes, I read that.....it's like they are trying to provoke. It will probably settle back down (I hope) Kim Jung Il is famous for throwing a tantrum every now and then. But this could be dangerous. One day he will get pushed back.
