This whole situation is just f#, i mean, who in there right mind would put a oil rig here. OH, I'M SORRY, BP WOULD. OH, the pressure bp ,could make so much money and the oil would just gush out. bp to make mega buck. HEY BP, shove a few more golf balls down there maybe that will plug the leak. I'M sure the CEO of BP has plenty of that equipment laying around.
Guys, it's NOT a volcanoe underneath the ocean floor. Relax. Nothing is going to blow up. Amazes me how people ignored this.

Hey, all...just wanted to throw my 10 cents in here. Just for the record, I AM a geologist. That being said, I'm very, very certain that drilling into a batholith or pluton would almost certainly result in...nothing! The reason why nothing would happen is that all a batholith/pluton really is is a really big rock. At one time it was magma, but it cooled and turned into an igneous rock. If it was still molten it wouldn't be called a batholith or pluton, it would be called magma. So, I'm not quite sure what all the fuss over drilling into one is about other than a misunderstanding.
Read through the thread. You will be surprised lol

Ok...I didn't read the whole thread *ducks and dodges thrown items*, just read the OP and skimmed the replies
But from the OP...am I hearing that your big concern is that it might be a volcanoe??? And this is somehow going to kill us all???
Volcanoes occur all the time in the ocean...in fact I think the majority of them do.

So could someone please explain to me how this would be any different and why it would be so bad???
Second of all...did someone just say that BP drilled into the Earth's core???
I'm sorry...does anyone really believe that?

A no fly zone has been enforced above 3,000 ft.
The locals seem to know very little.
The Guard is there, but what are they doing.
People are getting ill, and the CDC is there.
The top kill effort failed! It was said we would not know for at least 48 hours, yet, they shut down the project in less than 24 hours, no explanation, just shut it down immediately.
Why?
SUMMARY OF EXPECTATIONS
At some point the drilled hole in the earth will enlarge itself beneath the wellhead to weaken the area the wellhead rests upon. The intense pressure will then push the wellhead off the hole allowing a direct unrestricted flow of oil, etc.
The hole will continue to increase in size allowing more and more oil to rise into the Gulf. After several billion barrels of oil have been released, the pressure within the massive cavity five miles beneath the ocean floor will begin to normalize. This will allow the water, under the intense pressure at 1 mile deep, to be forced into the hole and the cavity where the oil was. The temperature at that depth is near 400 degrees, possibly more. The water will be vaporized and turned into steam, creating an enormous amount of force, lifting the Gulf floor.
It is difficult to know how much water will go down to the core and therefore, its not possible to fully calculate the rise of the floor. The tsunami wave this will create will be anywhere from 20 to 80 feet high, possibly more. Then the floor will fall into the now vacant chamber. This is how nature will seal the hole. Depending on the height of the tsunami, the ocean debris, oil, and existing structures that will be washed away on shore and inland, will leave the area from 50 to 200 miles inland devoid of life. Even if the debris is cleaned up, the contaminants that will be in the ground and water supply will prohibit re-population of these areas for an unknown number of years.
