...nice come back...

See...the thing is I wouldn't have any issues with your initial reply if it didn't contain perceiveably snide comments like "moderators getting a cob on" and "ego stroking" etc. Thats the issue as I see it...by all means state your opinions and challenge, but snidey little remarks indespersed between what are otherwise decent enough points just get peoples backs up and pretty soon #e starts getting axed.

on the concept of quality.

views and opinions in these forums are subjective.
users are anonymous.
there is no way of deducing "acceptable" behaviour outside strict parameters of taste decency and legality, and even these are ambiguous as demonstrated by the discussion of illegal activitys engaged in by certain users and recent differing opinions concerning one members avatar and its possible pornographic qualities.

The site self censors certain words but semiotically there is no difference between fu*k and f%$k

hence it exists in a state where moral intellectual or philosophical limitations on how people express themselves cannot be objective and must come down to the subjective views of an authority.

the authority in question has in this case no ability to judge cultural or social origins of those posting.

thus it must impose its own morality based on its own cultural beliefs.

I could be wrong but I believe most of the mods are white western males.

so I'm wondering...

assuming that, based on this cultural bias, they're "taking back ATS" for the white western male...

when do we get to the good stuff like the cross burning, the hangings and the wearing of sheets?

thats fair enough.
and to be fair, they were snide and designed to get your back up, I come from a school of thought that believes debate starts with two people deconstructing their personalitys and exposing their worst aspects, once thats out of the way you can get into a decent discussion.

Its not everyones idea of a good time, but it burns my bunsen.

nayway, no offense meant.
hope the clean up goes well.

I understand that moderators are here to moderate content and make sure that "drivel posts" are phased out of the "official" forums. What I would like to know is are the rules for "take back ats" going to be applied to the chit chat forum? I mean surely we should be allowed "drivel posts" in this area if nowhere else. Apart from that one concern, i'm all for getting shot of the idiots. I'm sure people know who i'm talkin about.

unfortunately not.
I mean, well, MT69's an idiot, and nan is rapidly proving herself an idiot....and halo's an idiot...by proxy of his previous incarnation.

but then according to them, I'm an idiot, and Johns an idiot.....and according to Q.O. Bush is an idiot, and according to Bush etc etc etc etc.

I'd rather tollerate the idiots in exchange for never having to worry about them tollerating me.

Since there is no such thing as 'off topic' in Chit Chat:

Lupe - is 'getting a massive cob on' a regional phrase? Copyrighted? No? Good, I've got to start working that into conversation!

Alien - are the lips traditionally tatooed as well?

William - is that Loco Alexander from the V.U.?

On Topic: Yeah, it's overdue in checking any poster whose opening salvo is off topic & derisive without any attempt to assume a position on topic and debate it. I don't think anyone has issue with charges of being a 'flaming arsehole' being lobbed back & forth AFTER debate points have been staked out; just when it's in lieu of.

What's wrong with their avatars anyway? They can be what ever the person wants them to be. Think of it as when you have a job, and you wear clothing with the company logo on it. Well their avatar is like their logo. It's fine with me, I don't think there is any hidden meaning or anything.

I have to idea of its origins, to get a cob on, usually stated as "she's got a cob on" or "he's got a cob on about ~insert personal bug bear"
means to be feeling particularly fractious about a specific thing.

same as a "bee in your bonnet" but more specific than a "chip on your shoulder"

I think it might be a northern phrase.

Lupe, if you haven't figured it out already, which you obviously haven't, flaming the Admins/Mods will get you nowhere! If anything it will get you banned. The reason for this "take back ATS" theme is to try to cut down on the 5 word responses and the flaming of each other. This board has attracted some (a lot) people who feel the only value of posting is the amount of stars you have. The new theme and committee behind it are trying to make people more involved and sensible in their posts that apply with the associated topic, and to try to avoid each other from fighting. With fighting I mean calling each other immature names or curses, all that shows is immaturity. Just remember, its not quantity but quality.

I feel like lupe had some good issues that had to be dealt with in one of his frist post in this thread. But what does William do? He tells him to back off. Then William acts suprised when lupe comes back with a harsh comment. Is this what will happen to anyone who tries and defies the all powerful mod/admin. I have nothing against any of you but people also need th right to disagree with em. I think the take back ats is a good idea as long as it doesnt go extreme! We here at ats are in a recession. We had a ton of good topics come up during 9-11 had a rebirth but now were slowly goes backwards. were in a slump right now and it my take some time to get us out of it. Thats why action is nessasary now but u should also leave some ppl alone for now. They eventually leave by themselvesdue to many reason. Thanks and GOODFIGHT

QUICKY-------OUT

MM is extremely correct here in that, well, idiots come to the board, post stupid stuff, and then are banned for one reason or another. The point of the "TBATS" is to get people to realize the worthlessness and foolishness of pointing fingers and insulting others.

And, of course, I for one am not innocent of these *hanis* crimes, but it needs to be cut down on on this fair board. It is necessary to show peope that, hey, that crap is not gonna be put up with and will not be tolerated.

But, sorry mods/admins... The avatars are too much. This is why there are sigs.

urgh. don't you have lives?

Yes indeed, which is why there are a number of us. And, which is why a hobby-styled escape is a good thing. Today, for example, I sat through 10 hours of focus groups with cancer patients (I'm not sure how many people don't still know this, but I work in advertising, and one of our clients is the leading cancer hospital in the nation). While our work is indeed worthy, the process is extremely taxing and stressful. Coming here to hand with the virtual clan is relaxing after such work. And since my involvement is digital/internet related, valuable to my real life.

And this is just a small self-cented slice of your forum staff that has a real life beyond ATS. However, we care about this crazy asylum and don't want to see it crumble like so many other similar communities.

YIKES!

Yes... it does have a branding campaign feel doesn't it?

I suppose it's my fault... being in advertising, and designing the first few avatars... old habits die hard.

OK, I've had just about enough of this bickering! I can't take it!

Lupe- Change your tampon, seriously. Calm down and discuss your problems reasonably with the mods. I'm sure they will be happy to address your concerns. Either that or get out of here, please. You don't have to be here.

Mods/Admins- Calm down. Don't egg Lupe on. Your only making it worse. Explain to him what your going to do, and explain it to everybody. I'm sure that you will follow through with which you promise to do, and that you won't let ATS fall any more. I too am sad to realize that the posts are degrading to people of certain races, ethnicity, age, and sex. I myself have insulted people before, I admit it. But I'm not going to anymore, they don't deserve to be insulted, I know almost nothing about them.

So, please, all of you take this into heart....

"but I work in advertising"

going to have to refer you to Bill Hicks on that one.

In other news:

maybe you should set up a "contentious issues sutable for flaming" forum.

no seriously.

There are plenty of people here who 'd love to verbaly chew a new a-hole, and I'm sure theres plenty of other people here who'd love to do the same for me.

I'd love to start a thread titled "why I don't give a toss where you went to university" and let rip all over MT69 because I feel he has issues that need discussing, and discussing them would not be a polite experience.

the inclusion of a ranting forum would allow threads that had degenerated into flame wars to get moved there without the posters worrying about upsetting your sensibilitys.

you seem to infer that there is no place for short pithy responses or emotive posts.

Fair enough, I however believe that a witty retort or an angry rant does add a perspective to certain issues.

as such why not place a forum specifically for those kinds of issues.

would certainly justify you turning round and telling people they're being inapropriate on other threads, because they would actually have somwhere to go for that kind of thing.

I'm surprised the mods haven't booted Lupe already. I dare say Lupe insults people on the net because he doesn't have the guts to do it to someones face. The ultimate coward.

Lupe,

LOL, I like that last comment

Jesus, Lupe, calm the hell down! You haven't been banned yet, and henceforth I really see no reason why the mods/admins would bring up the extremities of taking that action. I mean, while you may be a pain every once in a while, you *usually* are a quality poster, and although that you may end up in one of your "annoyance" moods(like right now) you've never been banned for really truly speaking your mind.

So get your boxers out of the bunch they're in and just think about the current statistics. Ask your question(calmly), get the answer, and you'll be good.

Explain why any community would deem it appropriate to retain any member who expresses this as one of their desires.

I've recently defended you, preventing a banning yesterday. Now, I'm not so sure.
