I found an article that describes a majority of the teenage population.

That is Limerence, a state of having extended periods of a 'crush', accompanied by wanting obsessive and intrusive thoughts over your 'Limerent Object' - ie, the one you would like to have as a girlfriend/boyfriend.

Wikipedia Entry on Limerence

Noun

Limerence (plural limerences)

An involuntary state of mind which seems to result from a romantic attraction for another person combined with an overwhelming, obsessive need to have one's feelings reciprocated.

I'm a little perplexed by this situation. When will a wonder drug be created to stop the feelings of Limerence? Another way for pharmacutical companies to make the big bucks. Eventually finding ways to describe anyone who has emotion to be mentally ill, drug them up, and make a future society full of emotionless drones.

The matter of fact is, the infactuation process starts from puperty onwards, a means of a natural desire to procreate, a survival instinct of the species. Pump the kids with new drugs, and make them study harder!

Its a conflict of interest, the body says 'do it', the mind says 'noooo'. Majority of cases people grow out of infactuation mode in a natural process.

When will they label 'hate' as a mental illness. Drug people up to prevent terrorism. You can find any emotion that can go to extremes, but this is a tad overboard.

Awaiting the day they pump it into the water.

Hey look, someone wrote an article about me!

I'm finding it hard to believe that someone put a "scientific" term to the common childish crush that I'm sure we've all experienced at least once in our lives. Marty, you make a good point though, with a label, they can start prescribing drugs for it now...yaaaay, another reason to tell our kids we think there's something wrong with them!

What I can say for the article though, is that it pegs this "condition" to a T. If nothing else, it might be a helpful read for kids in a 'state of limerence', just to put things in perspective and bring a little reality back into their lives. Who knows, it might actually serve to reduce jsut a little bit of the average teenage drama.

Good find, Marty, I had a good laugh at myself today XD

A great topic Marty. Limerence -- not a frequent discussion theme here at ATS, and that is too bad.

I don't think limerence is a type of mental illness, although it can be very unpleasant to experience, under many circumstances. I would say the cognitive disorder related to limerence would be Erotomania, which is a legitimate and recognized type of delusion disorder.

Wikipedia calls "erotomania" a rare condition, but I wonder.

I am out of limerence for today. Does anyone have some extra they want to share?

i see, the loonies are still running the asylum and striving to drug up all those awkward sane people so they don't stand out like sore thumbs anymore.

it's a brave new world out there.

PS: when they declare sex abnormal and druggable, the species will finally come to its well deserved end. /cynical quip

I think we are headed in the opposite direction. Check your e-mail. It is called Viagra.

Now, if they could find a drug that would INDUCE limerence -- that would be cool. Might pave the way to some much needed understanding between the genders. See my thread: Sex Wars: Battle For Planet Earth to see what I mean. (Not wanting to plug my own thread, but it is so appropriate to this topic.)

this is just one more case of everything being a mental disorder. i hate how modern psyches just think if it happend mentaly it must be a disorder, some thing happen for a predetermined reason . if they come up with a pill for this il be livid.

popping a few pills will not make me have seks, it'll give me high blood pressure and a er, h*** *n, at the very most, right?

besides, viagra is a drug, right? iow, using a drug for seks is already established. if something is of any significance, it will eventually be outlawed or heavily regulated. don't count on the scientific world's sanity, they invented eugenics and never 'fessed up, you can bet that the concept is still prevalent and therefore, today's exams are more often than not geared towards 'measuring the individual's worth' whatever that means, rather than skills, much less skills required for the task at hand and regimentation will only increase in order to fulfill their ideology, where reality fails them.

on the long run, we'll either be free by our own actions or some gang of shrinks will decide who gets to mate whom, voluntary or not. it is all about power. to get an idea what people in power are like today, see f-ex.

influential? yep. well organized? yep. having and following a vision? sure as heck.

our role? KIA or enslaved. let's not play that role.
