Antarctic volcanoes identified as a possible culprit in glacier melting

www.iht.com

Another factor might be contributing to the thinning of some of the Antarctica's glaciers: volcanoes.

In an article published Sunday on the Web site of the journal Nature Geoscience, Hugh Corr and David Vaughan of the British Antarctic Survey report the identification of a layer of volcanic ash and glass shards frozen within an ice sheet in western Antarctica.

"This is the first time we have seen a volcano beneath the ice sheet punch a hole through the ice sheet" in Antarctica, Vaughan said.

Volcanic heat could still be melting ice to water and contributing to thinning and speeding up of the Pine Island glacier, which passes nearby, but Vaughan said he doubted that it could be affecting other glaciers in western Antarctica, which have also thinned in recent years. Most glaciologists, including Vaughan, say that warmer ocean water is the primary cause of thinning.

Aha! More people realizing that Global Warming is a Crock of $h!t.

Did anyone see the Giants packers football game last night? I believe they were handing out Algores global warming movie complete with a laugh track.

I posted another article relating to this a couple of hours ago in Fragile Earth here. Traderonwallst, you mirror my feelings on the matter. I am still not convinced the global warming, climate change, etc. is happening at an unnatural rate given the cycles of our planet Earth.

The article doesn't support the volcanic theory. And haven't you yourself posted in the past that Antarctic ice sheets are growing not shrinking? If the ice is shrinking at both poles, that pretty much proves global warming is real.

like the article says, the eruption happened around the time tha Alexander the Great was conquering parts of Europe-Asia-Middle East-Africa...

if Alex had had knowledge of a volcanic eruption down there,
would the Oracles of his day have declared that a doorway to hades
was opened up and the world's fate was a future of fire & brimstone
(which is extreme Global Warming )

Oh cool!!!

So we can keep consuming to our hearts content, creating a plethora of waste and poisoning the eco-system. There's nothing like a Get out of Jail card is there???

Why do so many people keep missing the point - whether natural cycles or man made, we're still swimming in sh**.

You mean the melting is not due to Gore's hot air after all?

Maybe he should give back all his awards.

While the causes are a matter of dispute and the significance of the current trend could be greater or less, Global Warming is a fact. Simply stated, the Mean Global Temperature has been on an uptrend for some time now.

Pretending it's not happening is just some people's way of dealing with things. It's an approach that does away with feelings like guilt and anxiety but it does bring its own dangers.

Whether you agree or not that Global Warming is man-made, fossil fuels are running out anyway so there's no excuse for us being smug and cynical.

this website theorizes that the warming by underwater volcanoes will lead to increase precipitation and in fact plunge us into another ice age.

and his theory seems to hold water, cold water. there has been record low temps around the world in recent years..

Parts of Austria felt more like Siberia, with the mercury plunging well below zero. The bitter cold hit an all-time low of minus 24 degrees in the Lower Austria town of Gross Gerungs, while in the beer-making town of Zwettl, it was minus 12 — the chilliest Jan. 24 since 1929.

Hi Mythatsa,

Actually nothing can be actually proven in this regards. Depends on which study you want to believe. Overall the Antarctic Ice cap is thickening. Only in certain areas is it thinning like in the area in question. Not sure about this? Try this recent study from New Scientisn...West Antarctic ice sheet is thickening

Am i wrong to point out that the "recent study" you point at is from 2002? I suppose that is relatively recent, but still...

Hi Earth,

Opps, you're right! My point is that a lot of Antarctica ice is thickening, esp. the eastern ice as found in the 2006 study Antarctic Ice Sheet (and the Plot) Thickens

So whatever you want to believe, you can find studies to support it more or less.

The earth has natural cycles. Only self-important egomaniacs could ever believe that WE can change the climate of a planet so drastically. Get over it. We are here for the ride, and we do not control a thing. Whatever is happening at any given time, is a result of forces not of our making. We are far too insignificant, in spite of what the algore crowd thinks of themselves. In 20 years, algore and his minions, will be derided as the kooks and charlatans they are. People are getting rich on this charade, and those that promote it are complicit in nothing more than a doomsday falacy designed to generate huge profits for those controlling it. Wake up folks.

I have read that both poles have shown BOTH considerable melting of ice, AND, more recently, significant refreezing.
Is it possible that the Earth has simply slipped on it's axis?
Does anyone have the means to check this out? Clearly, if volcanic ash is evident then this will be a major contributor, but a sextant might show the possibility of a shift, just a thought?
Regards,
Horsegiver.

I'd draw your attention to this:

It is widely alleged that the science of global warming is “settled”. This implies that all the major scientific aspects of climate change are well understood and uncontroversial, and that scientists are now just mopping up unimportant details. The allegation is profoundly untrue: for example the US alone is said to be spending more than $4 billion annually on climate research, which is a lot to pay for detailing; and great uncertainty and argument surround many of the principles of climate change, and especially the magnitude of any human causation for warming. Worse still, not only is the science not “settled”, but its discussion in the public domain is contaminated by many fallacies, which leads directly to the great public confusion that is observed.

This paper explains the eight most common fallacies that underpin public discussion of the hypothesis that dangerous global warming is caused by human greenhouse gas emissions.
