Just found this video of the French president making a speech at the G8. He appears to be a little worse for wear.

Source: French president drunk at the G8

I've nothing against people having a few beers, but does anyone else thinks it's a little inappropriate to be getting wasted when you are supposed to be sorting issues that effect the whole world?

I know it's a standing joke that people put the world to rights when you've had a few....but personally i don't think it's a good idea when you are actualy in a position to put the world to rights!

If you would like to see a comparison in his demeanor. This might help. I have never seen him speak before but this helped a little

Announcer: "I can't resist the urge to show you this clip of the opening of French President Nicolas Sarkozy's press conference at the G8, which he gave after a detente with Russian President Vladimir Putin...and apparently, they drank nothing but water."

Sarkozy: "Ladies and gentlemen, please excuse my tardiness, which is due to the lengthly conversation (hee hee) I just had with Mr. Putin. How are we gonna do this, I answer questions? Soooo...any questions? Wha? Oh, ok. (puts ear thing in)."

I took enough French to understand what he said, and yeah he looked wasted.

I think it's cool!!!!

edit:

In fact, I think I can only understand a drunken French person speaking like that, so slowly

Is it possible someone might have slipped him a mickey? You never know in this day and age how low the competition will stoop to make someone look bad.

Bush holds detente with Jack?

June 8 (Bloomberg) -- President George W. Bush fell ill with a mild stomach ailment this morning at the Group of Eight summit in Germany, forcing him to skip some morning meetings before resuming his schedule this afternoon.

When an official gets to the dizzy heights of president, are they not way past the newbie "jitters" by then?

He seemed dynamic and confident enough during the French elections.

Oh well, looks like thats the US and France with leaders who can't be trusted to behave themselves for just a few days.....we'll have to rely on the rest of the world to sort the planet out.

I'm delighted to see that we have nothing more important to worry about then the American and French presidents having a drink at a summit
. Once again this falls under the category of so what.

not at all, he's as cool as a cucumber, but drunk as a skunk!

Again, I don't see anything wrong with it at all, I think it's cool!

I'm not making any criticisms or judgements here. As mentioned earlier, I don't know the French President's "typical" demeanor so it would be difficult to simply say that he was drunk. As for having a drink or two? Well, keep in mind that he is French and, for the French, having a glass or two (three?) of wine is certainly not out of the ordinary.

This is a World, G-8 Economic Summit...not a Las Vegas Shriner's convention. I think this simply illustrates how little we expect from our leaders today...how little they expect from themselves. Something about this type of behavior by the powerful betrays a not-so-subtle arrogance...a basic lack of respect for us...the people...the electorate, regardless of nationality.

Am I overreacting here? Perhaps...perhaps not.

Recently, Mark Danner, an American journalist, gave an inspiring commencement speech before a group of Department of Rhetoric graduates - UC Berkeley.

His closing words:

"You have made your study in a propitious time, and that bold choice may bring you pain, for you have devoted yourselves to seeing what it is that stands before you. If clear sight were not so painful, many more would elect to have it."

Education time methinks

The G8 is not a college sleepover! You don't function as well and thought proccesses ARE affected by drink.

So when you have the world problems to discuss, you don't get wasted!

Is it really that hard to understand?

By all means get wrecked AFTER you've made world changing decisions, but not during!

Education time back at you; where is the proof he's drunk? I don't see any or perhaps you have some. If so share it otherwise this is speculation and conjecture. Proof please.

I doubt it. Security is rather tight.

SIDE NOTE (to everyone - not just you ThePieMan) - so how come when people see G.W. acting wonky they say he's drunk .. and they don't give him the benefit of wondering if someone slipped him a mickey???

Interesting point just made on Sky News....

Very tounge in cheek chat about this footage, almost sarcasticly put stating that they (Sky) would never say that he was drunk, however if this had been Tony Blair, this footage would have been played every hour to bring this to viewers attention.

They said that this could quite simply have been something like a sleeping pill making him groggy, or just tiredness after a long session with Mr Putin.

Now then, and this is the bit i found interesting. Sky also said that this footage has not been shown by the French media, they have in fact avoided it like the plague. Why?

One possible reason is that last year a french newspaper wrote something about Nicolas Sarkozy's wife, then funnily enough the writer of that article found themselves out of a job.

Turns out that Nicolas Sarkozy is best friends with (and i forget the exact position of his friend) either the editor of this said newspaper, or the top guy in France with regards to the media.

Sorry about the sketchy details, i'll try and post better facts once they talk about it again on Sky.

What they are saying is, the French press are probably remembering what can happen when you air anything negative about the french president and are steering clear of such talk.

Any opinions on this? Are the French only fed what the powers that be want them to be, the same as what happens here?

It's on Sky News channel today anyway, apparently the Belgian news agency that first released the footage have apologised for implying that the president was drunk.

I forgot about the French elections after the first vote.
I did not think that the Conservative party would win really, I thought that the Socialist would get more of the votes from 3rd parties that lost the first round......

Anyways..

I to speak enough French to tell

1. What he said,

2. That he was not sure what he was actually saying

3. A slight hint at French Slury
if you know what I mean.

BUT I think France learned a good lesson here...

Stick to wine and cheese, and NEVER contend with a Russian and Vodka.
If I where Russian I would be rolling that my president got Sarkozy drunk!

As for Bush's mysterious ailment.. thats not the first time thats happened after a party, news always says hes sick with a bug when in reality he he was so hung over the camera lights would make him vomit all over the podium.

Some of the most important decisions in the worlds history where made by men intoxicated.

This is a longer version of the conference..

I like where he almost burps lol... I think he has the hic-ups.

If anyone has seen the guy before, especially at rally he is a much better speaker then that.
