I have to agree and disagree with that. Steve would have been very aware of the tail length, any diver does. But I said to a friend the day it happened "I bet he pulled it's tail or something", so it wouldn't suprise me if you're right with that bit.

I was spearfishing the day he died, and had a reasonably large one swim along side me about 3 metres away. Then when I got out the water, I rand my boss and he told me Steve had died from a stingray.

That really felt weird for me, and still does.
