A Bellview Airlines Boeing 737 is suspected of crashing shortly after take off from Nigeria's Lagos airport. The Bellview Airlines flight 210 disappeared off radar screens during a fierce electrical storm on route to Nigeria's capital Abuja, with 116 people onboard including some government officials. Eight hours after the suspected crash there was still no sight of the plane or wreckage and no reports have come through of any survivors. At this stage it is not certain whether the plane crashed into the Atlantic Ocean or whether it crashed over land after turning North on it's flight path.

Bellview Airlines flight 210 took off and lost contact with the control tower during a heavy electrical storm.

The plane rapidly vanished from radar screens, police and aviation officials said.

Helicopters are searching for survivors.

The state radio report did not say where the jet had come down, nor if there was any survivors.

But Nigerian Maritime Authority official Tidjani Bako said the search was now concentrating inland, in an area between the cities of Ibadan and Ilorin, 100 kilometres north-east of Lagos.

"I don't think anyone could have survived if it went down over land," he said.

Nigerian police spokesman Emmanuel Ighodalo said: "We're still trying to find out where it happened. It can't be far from Lagos. Our search teams are out, we'll find it."

Yet another plane crash of government officials. That makes three, one in South America, one in Indonesia and now this one.

More updates as they become available.

Seems like the plane may have crashed into the Atlantic Ocean. Some fishermen reported seeing a large object falling into the water.

IC Publications: Fishermen see object fall into sea after Nigerian jet goes missing

A large object fell into the Atlantic Ocean off the west African coast shortly after a Nigerian airliner dropped off radar screens and disappeared, witnesses said Sunday.

"We were heading out to sea at around nightfall, when I saw a large mass fall into the water," fisherman Pierre Ahouansou told AFP on his return to the port of Cotonou in Nigeria's neighbour Benin.

"It was a great big thing. It shook the surface of the water," he said.

Ahouansou's apprentice, Pamphele Folly, confirmed the sighting. Both spoke to a reporter before hearing reports of the missing airliner.

Plane wreckage found... inland...hmm. Did the fishermen made it up? Were there two planes?

And this is not Obasanjo´s lucky day...

CNN: Wreckage of Nigerian jet found

The wreckage of a passenger jet with 114 people on board has been found in central Nigeria, authorities said. There was no information on survivors.

The wreckage was located between the Oyo and Kwara states after daylight on Sunday. Search teams were en route to the area.

The pilot issued a distress call just before the control tower lost sight of the plane about three minutes after takeoff, officials said.

Well I hope the Nigerian officials onboard that plane are the same ones that send emails to my email account complaining about needing a place to stash $millions in oil revenues from the accounts of people who died w/o heirs.

That would be justice!

This is only like the 5th Boeing 737 crash within the last 6 months: Cypriot, South American, and a few others which I can't remember. This cannot be too good for their competition with Air Bus. I don't believe that these crashes are manufacture related but it sure as hell does hurt their image.

The mystery continues with conflicting reports on the plane's whereabouts and witnesses reporting the plane blowing apart in midair.

First and initial reports said the plane had crashed in one province and there were over 50 survivors. Why would someone make such a false report.

The next reports came through cancelling the first reports and saying the plane went down in a town and flattened houses. Why then did it take so long to find it?

If it came down in a town and flattened houses I would say the reports would have been issued of the whereabouts a lot earlier than released..

Somethings going on here..

www.abc.net.au...
Lissa farmer Hammed Ijalaye said: "We heard a very loud noise and then all of a sudden we heard a very big bang.
"We thought it was a bomb explosion and we were all very scared."
Other witnesses corroborate this account of an explosion preceding the crash.
Separately, the wife of a senior west African official who died on the flight, General Cheik Oumar Diarra, says he has been told by his colleagues that the plane had blown apart.
"They called to tell us that he is dead. There was no survivor. The plane exploded in mid-air," General Diarra's wife N'Deye Marie said.
Nigerian investigators have no early explanation for the disaster.

www.news.com.au...
THE Nigerian government has announced three days of mourning following the deaths of all 117 people aboard a Boeing 737 which crashed yesterday.
All 117 people on board a Boeing 737 that crashed in south-western Nigeria are dead, the government said in a statement today. The Bellview Airlines flight lost contact with the control tower minutes after taking off from Lagos in a storm en route to the capital Abuja on Saturday night, and rescuers found the smouldering wreckage 30km from Lagos today.
"The Federal Government announces with regret the unfortunate air crash of Bellview Airlines ... which resulted in the loss of life of all passengers and crew on board," the statement said

In the report below it says a TV crew found the wreckage. What took so long for it to be released. Why the first false report?

www.abc.net.au...
Nigerian television channel AIT had reported one of its crews had found the crashed plane in the village of Lissa, a short distance outside Ifo, which is itself not far outside Lagos, from where the Boeing 737 took off at 7.50pm on Saturday local time with 116 people on board.
The station showed images taken at the alleged crash site which showed bodies, a flight ticket and what appeared to be part of the jet's tail.
Lagos control tower lost touch with the plane just three minutes after it left the city bound for the capital Abuja on a flight path that would take it over Lissa, airline officials say.
Mr Nweke offered no explanation for the discrepancies in the information.
Earlier, a spokesman for Oyo State, Adeola Oloko, had also said that the jet had crashed in Kishi.
Following Mr Nweke's update Mr Oloko confirmed that he had been mistaken.
Mr Oloko had also said that half of the passengers were still alive and that an emergency rescue operation had been launched.

www.abc.net.au...
A Nigerian spokesman for Oyo state has retracted his earlier comments that an airliner with 116 passengers on board had crashed in his state and 50 or more passengers had survived.
Spokesman Adeola Oloko told Reuters he was retracting his statements after a television crew said it had found the site of the Bellview Airlines crash on Saturday night in Lissa in Ogun state, some 150 kilometres further south.
Nigerian television station AIT said its news crew had found the site of the crash but made no mention of survivors.

and here is the totally false report being reported.

www.abc.net.au...
Government officials in Nigeria say there have been some survivors from the crash of a passenger plane.
They say there could be as many as 50 survivors but there are no details at this stage.
The wreckage of Bellview Airlines flight 210 has been found in a rural area near Oyo state, north-east of Lagos on the way to the plane's destination of Abuja.

The Boeing 737-200 is believed to have been carrying as many as 116 people and military search and rescue teams are on the way to the crash site in search of survivors.
Distraught families have gathered at the Lagos airport where the plane took off last night.
A distress call from the plane was received soon after it took off in bad weather.
It is believed that several Nigerian dignitaries were on the aircraft.
It is still unclearabcwire.send-wallace.news
whether there were any foreigners on board.

Wow. I may get criticized for seizing the conspiracy angle, but this is what came to my mind... I wonder if this has anything to do with the forged documents claiming that Saddam was attempting to buy uranium from Niger?

Would Niger Gov't Officials be Involved?

The fact that the Niger documents were fake is hard proof that the lies that tricked this nation into war were not an accident, not "misinterpreted" or "bad" intelligence, but deliberate falsehood with malice aforethought. We The People were lied to intentionally to trick us into supporting a war of conquest against an innocent nation that had done us no wrong.

Also it was over the "yellowcake documents" that the whole Valerie Plame affair began. A similar connection though it is probally just coincidence that a plane possibly carring Nigerian officals goes down just days before the indictments are expected to be handed down to Karl Rove.

I think I just read to much into it but it is an interesting coincidence. Though I do admit it was my first thought, the second one was the fact that this is like the 4th or 5th plane crash to make headlines this year as others have pointed out.

Hmm. the plane crashed just after a "confirmed" terrorist was arrested at the very same airport. And The Federal Government "ordered security agents to be on red alert at all the nation's gateways". This article is from two days before the crash...

Terrorism: Security Agents On Red Alert (allAfrica.com)

October 21, 2005

The Federal Government has ordered security agents to be on red alert at all the nation's gateways following the arrest recently of a suspected terrorist at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

Ayuba disclosed that the suspect, who was recently arrested at the airport on arrival into the country, was questioned and handed over to the State Security Service (SSS). The Immigration chief who did not disclose the airline the suspect came in nor his nationality or where he took off from, said that he was given away by the kind of documents he was reading while he was in the aircraft. Other passengers, according to her, promptly alerted immigration officials at the airport on arrival and he was arrested, questioned and handed over to the SSS. "The SSS took him over and the claim he was a terrorist has since been confirmed and he had been sent to Abuja for necessary other actions.

"And after that, I am aware that government had issued stern orders to security agents at all points of the nation's gateways to be on the alert and watch out for such characters that may attempt to come into the country,"

And the death of Stella de Obasanjo (The President´s wife) on the same day is suspicious too. She died during "plastic surgery" and the exact cause of the death is not yet known. They will do an autopsy.

Wow. So all these government officials keep getting killed. Hmmm, seems the US Govt. has a fetish of using planes to kill people.

"Oh that? It just uh, when this impossible thing happened it caused the plane to shoot up in the air! It wasn't a rocket attack even if every eyewitness said it was a rocket attack from the CIA, it wasn't that."

That plane that just blew up after being hit by a rocket, but the govt. said it wasn't a rocket attack, it wasn't the republicans killing people with planes, again.

The 737 is the most popular model of passenger plane out there. IIRC there are over 4-5000 of them flying, or more. This one, and at least one or two others were -200s which were flying in the 70s and early 80s. They're just getting old and if they aren't taken care of them fall apart. We have -200s flying around a home, and one of them wound up doing a convertible impression, because they put so many cycles on them, and just didn't maintain them properly.

Among the passengers were a U.S. Special Forces officer, top counter-terrorism officials of the Obasanjo government and senior regional security officers! Apparently there was an explosion in the air, and there are conflicting reports over whether the black box has been found or not. The crash site was not properly secured in the days immediately after the crash.

Douglas Farah: More Concerns over Nigerian Flight Crash and Liberians in Ivory Coast

Monday, October 31, 2005

There is growing evidence that the Oct. 22 airplane crash in Nigeria that killed all 117 people on board--including a U.S. Special Forces officer, top counter-terrorism officials of the Obasanjo government and senior regional security officers--was sabotage, not accident. Senior Nigerian officials are now saying publicly that there was an explosion in the air, before the aircraft, which had recently passed inspection, crashed to the earth. The lastest official statements can be found here.

At least one previously unknown group from the troubled Niger Delta region has taken credit for the downing, but the claim has been disavowed by other groups, and there seems to be little indication that any are legitimate. There are also conflicting reports over whether the black box has been found. Numerous international teams will be arriving in coming days to comb over the remains of the wreakage, but it appears the site was not properly secured in the days immediately after the crash, so it is unclear if anything of interest has been disturbed, removed or destroyed. But the blowing up of a commercial airliner would mark a dangerous new phase of the unrest in Nigeria, whether it be by international criminal syndicates, Islamic terrorist operating in the country, disgruntled armed groups in the oil-rich Delta region or any combination of the above.

Some updates on the plane crash. Water contaminated? "Excavated", I don´t know that word... What does it mean, "eaten by snakes"?

Crashed Bellview Plane Excavation Almost Completed

November 10, 2005

Indications emerged yesterday that more than 80 percent of the entombed Bellview aircraft that crashed at Lisa Igbore village in Ifo area of Ogun State, have been excavated.

However, nothing was said about the discovery of the black box, as all the agencies involved in the excavation process and other workers at the site kept sealed lips.

Meanwhile, at about 12:15pm yesterday, a water tanker belonging to the Nigerian Air Space Management Agency (NAMA) supplied the villagers with portable water to assist them, since they could not have access to their initial source of water, mainly stream, but which were said to have been contaminated.
