I was not sure where to place this, so this will have to do. I also saw the program mentioned in another thread, but its hardly worth bringing up that
link.
The program in question is Terragen for the PC or Mac.
This program is absolutely amazing (and free!). With it you can "draw" 3D terrain and render it on your pc.
Here is some shots of what it can do.
While you can also make entire planets, these below shots are from a version not available to the public yet.
Its really just amazing, especially for such a simple, small free program. The new version has been used in many mainstream applications.
As mentioned on the website:

of CG terrain shots in a big budget film for 2005.
