I was not sure where to place this, so this will have to do. I also saw the program mentioned in another thread, but its hardly worth bringing up that link.

The program in question is Terragen for the PC or Mac.

This program is absolutely amazing (and free!). With it you can "draw" 3D terrain and render it on your pc.

Here is some shots of what it can do.

While you can also make entire planets, these below shots are from a version not available to the public yet.

Its really just amazing, especially for such a simple, small free program. The new version has been used in many mainstream applications.

As mentioned on the website:

The core technology in TGD was used to render planets for Star Trek: Nemesis in 2002 (article in Cinefex 93) and is now being relied upon for hundreds of CG terrain shots in a big budget film for 2005.

Here are the download locations for windows and mac.

Downloads
Its about 1.6 megs. Yes only 1.6 megs

Learn how to make planets in terragen here:
terranuts.com...

General Help here: (and cool photos)
individual.utoronto.ca...
www.basinski-net.de...

That should get you started.

Enjoy. Its a cool time waster. But if you make a complicated world, its going to take longer to render.

Terragen is pretty sharp. There's another freebie out there too, Blender 3D Modeling Software. It's got a pretty steep learning curve, but well worth the effort to put into it. You can take stuff you create in Terragen and import it into Blender, make animations and stuff.

- Here's my first landscape that I ever did in Terragen and then used and still use Photoshop to give these landscapes life.

Edited because I used the wrong Image embeder, so click the link to see the photo.

Many of us in the Total Annihilaiton mod community use it to make maps, esspecially in the new 3D incarnation (Spring TA).
