Chaga , inotus obliqus, grows on the Betula/birch genus and very rarely a cherry variety (non fruiting). It seems to grow the most on yellow, which it’s spores colonize when damaged.

The mycelium grows into the heart wood of the birch/betula where it absorbs betulin converting it into betulunic acid in the conch (the hardened mass formed as the “fruit”) which you use powdered as a beverage. Betulinic acid is one of the primary constituents considered as effective in certain medical paradigms.

It was first recognized in Eastern Europe around the 15th century and has been praised for its profound properties benefiting inflammation of the digestive tract.

It’s one of my favorite mushrooms as well.

If you take a little piece of bark from the birch tree which contains betulin, or birch tree syrup and mix it with alcohol, it forms Butulinic acid. This can also be done with leaves from the birch tree, but I do not know how to do that for sure because that has different chemicals in it and I do not know how that would work.

I do have birch syrup and alcohol and I do have some stuff to collect sap in stock. I bought a little bottle of birch syrup from the guy I get my maple syrup and strawberries from to experiment with. I guess it is good to put on meat before BBQing, just need to mix a little Jack Daniels with it to make a good medicinal steak sauce.

The chaga just converts the betulin by sort of creating some alcohol I guess to make it medicinal.

I love your chemistry knowledge! It’s quite interesting to see one paradigm described in the context of another!

Those appear to be Matango mushrooms, very rare to find them outside of the Pacific Rim.

Just about everyone that offered the identification had a different mushroom.

Time for AI on this,

champignouf.com...

It will ask for a picture like you showed in the OP.

I think it's: armillaria tabescens
Or perhaps armillaria mellea , hymenochaete , armillaria ostoyae , or lyophyllum decastes
or something totally different!

Warning!!! Many mushrooms look alike and many are toxic!
Champignouf makes a lot of mistakes!
Do not eat mushrooms without being sure they are edible, you could die!

I'm never eating a wild mushroom I looked up each one it mentioned not a single match .

So much misinfo, this thread is useless.

“Don’t eat mushrooms from the dirt.”
Like morels? Or edible bolete? Shiitake, etc?

If you don’t know anything about picking, the Internet is not a safe place to learn. Find a local club.

It’s far easier and safer than people on here portray; I’ve been eating wild mushrooms since my childhood, (picking with extended family) and I’ve never gotten sick from it.

You can do it, and it will turn into a hobby of a lifetime. But you Zoomers can’t do it on the Internet, so most of you never will.

Es tut mir Leid
