I get 2 15 minute breaks, an hour lunch, and as many bathroom breaks as I need every day. I feel like that is more than sufficient.

A fingerprint reader everywhere in the office is ridiculous but so is a break every 20 minutes.

The excessive breaks probably caused the installation of the readers. It’s usually only one that ruins things for the rest.

a company I worked for used "connect wise" to manage our jobs and time. They wanted an accounting for every minute spent, and I literally spent more of my free time engineering my schedule, than I spent on relaxing. it was tedious and annoying. It was micromanaging to a degree I had no idea existed.

I know what needs to be done, and how it needs to be done for my job. If I'm trusted to be left alone, I provide results that exceed expectations. But I couldn't work like this.

So thats 24 5-minute breaks in an 8-hour work day? Do you actually work just 6 hours depending on how long is your lunch ?

I don't think Ive ever had a white-collar job with that many breaks and most blue-collar jobs it was 30 minutes for lunch and maybe 2 bathroom breaks a day

Im in sales too, but we operate in you work till there are no more customers to work. One individual sale presentation can routinely take 3 hours or longer. It's just not feasible to walk away every 20 minutes to grab a smoke. Im damn glad I quit smoking a while back I get the need but get a patch or a vape. 3 quick puffs on NuJoy vape was like a whole cigarette and it was crucial in getting me to finally quit, and I could sneak it anywhere

but even working on a spreadsheet or graphic designing an ad, for me walking away interrupts my train of thought and it takes me a while to get back rolling smoothly, and everything is time sensitive

Can you get me a job working for you?

I like your philosophy, but we'll use your company, not mine, k?

Sounds like a time and motion approach applied to the cubicle environment. Yech.

If you are working for someone by the hour, you are supposed to be working during that time. Now as far as bathroom trips, I have known many people in the past that would go to the john and stay there for over fifteen minutes when it should have not taken more than five max to get the job done. It is probably worse now, people take their phones into the johns.

If people took reasonable breaks to go to the can, it would not be a problem. But even though only five to ten percent of people abuse these things, the management is forced to take action to control it on everyone. A small percentage of bad employees can ruin it for all of them

I remember when I had to work those types of jobs. Schedules down to 5-minute increments ended up having to put a 30-minute time entry every day for completing the day's time. Even now that I'm out of those environments yet still held to being billable, there's a four-hour blob of time on Friday that goes toward time entry and approval, expense reporting, and other admin work. Then again, I'm one of those "I'm paid for 40 hours, all you get is 40 hours" types of workers. I'm not the type to go above and beyond; if my regular work doesn't speak for itself, just let me know, and I'll find another place of employment.

Personally, I have always been taking around 5-10 minute break (more like 5, as I am smoker, although quite often we start discussing work with others) every 20 minutes, unless meetings, M and never working more than 8 hours.

You smoke a cigarette every 20 minutes? For an 8h day that is 20 cigarettes and more than 1.66h that waste to smoke at your workplace, when I calculate with 5 minutes per break.

You effectively cheat a whole day's work every week. 34h in a month. and you are not ashamed of yourself?

In California,

If your break is interrupted you start all over.

My coworker would ask me a question 29 minutes into my lunch.

Reset the clock, it was fun.

Generally more like 5 (I am smoker). Unless, I happen there with some team leads (Then we discuss work)

And you can't go, say, 1 hour between breaks ?

Every 20 minutes or 20 minutes on average seems highly excessive. You ADHD ?

I have ADHD and work is torture for me but still have to face it like everyone else.

Where can I get a job that allows breaks every twenty minute? Sign me up!!!

Lucky if I get five minutes for lunch at my job.

Smokers taking regular paid lazy breaks was so annoying, because while they smoked outside I’d have to do their work and mine. Strange as it may sound yes you are paid to work for those hours, and if others are having to do your work because you are taking breaks when they are not then know a lot of them probably dont like you.

It's 2023 !

Tell yer Boss™ you Identify™ as a smoker, and take the same breaks they do !

Woah, so you leave the work area to have your smoke break leaving a higher work level and work duties for those who actually stay put and do the work they know they are being paid to do?

The ideas you claim are happening during your smoke breaks are what meetings are for.

I consider this as theft of a company's time and wage while causing more work for those committed to their job.

Nice.

I can also take breaks whenever. I'm a janitor and as long as I'm getting everything done during my shift no one complains.

Why should he be?
Working for low pay is for suckers. And most jobs don't pay enough.

But I guess have fun living your life giving up your time to make some rich guy richer.
Because none of us knows how much time we have on earth.

I see most of the people are focusing on the 20 minute breaks. I am sorry. I might have exaggerated a bit (even though sometimes I can do even do one even every 10 min, but generally more like 30 min - 1 hour) and the goal of this thread was different, to focus on the micromanagement.

Breaks in my case do not necessarily mean breaks. The fact that I am not in the computer and am smoking, just walking around (my goal is getting 1 million steps every month) or in the kitchen does not mean I am not working. My job responsibilities entail a large amount of decisions and it is important for me to weigh all the options. For example, when I am smoking (I am heavy smoker), my mind is still on the problems and solutions. Technically, I can focus a lot longer, although I start to get cravings relatively soon and my eyes also get tired from speed-reading. In addition, half of my time or even more goes to meetings.

I do not spend more than 8 hours in the office, although majority of my free time is hazy area between work and personal life. During evenings, I do research on latest technologies, trends and research papers. In addition, I read a lot on leadership, psychology and business. I really do want to get the best out of my team without overloading them. That is my main goal - ensure that everybody performs, while happy and not stressed. The job is my passion and that is the reason, I have been constantly promoted.

Do not always believe what you see. The fact that somebody is not in computer, does not necessarily mean they are not working. There is a saying here : measure seven times, cut once. That is one of the philosophies, I have tried to teach. Think hard on all the possibilities and then make a decision/solution.

The fact that one is in computer, makes it seem like they are working. It does not show, whether they are on Youtube or thinking something else.

Also when I leave my desk, it does not mean that I leave work for others. My goal is getting my team perform. I have not done programming or technical work for ages at work. I just ensure everything gets delivered.
