All Govts lie to us. Those of us who are much, muuch older than 20 are generally more than capable of sorting the wheat from the chaff.

Then what are you criticizing me about?

Look, whippersnapper.... I'm old enough to remember the Gulf War of 1991. Only years later did we find out that our government told the most outrageous lies to drum up support for the war. There were hysterical reports on TV about how the evil Iraqis were cutting off Kuwaiti women's breasts, and going into hospitals and killing newborn babies. Turns out it was pure 100% fiction. The claimed atrocities were, literally, made up whole cloth by the Kuwaiti leaders, and repeated uncritically by the media.

More recently, we can remember how George W. Bush accused Saddam Hussein of having chemical weapons, and how the Taliban were supposedly harboring Osama bin Laden. Again, both claims were bald-faced lies.

So, sorry if I'm goring someone's sacred cow by refusing to accept the official casualty numbers, but experience has taught me that the odds that those reports are true are very low. It's not like the US government is a disinterested third party, you know.

What you getting so triggered about?

I'm 60, by the way. "Whippersnapper" indeed.

Like I said, all Govts lie to us.

"Years later"? Some of us figured those lies out at the time.

Like I also said, no country at war is going to give the enemy accurate information about it's losses.

That's just common sense.

The thing is, tho, if it turns out that this leak did come from a US source, then those lower Russian casualty figures are most likely true, or at least far closer to the truth than the propaganda figures published by the Ukrainians.

I'm not pro-Russian, I'm just not anti-Russian.

I agree 20-40 yrs hard labor for the next couple and I bet leaks go away with a quickness.

But if wishes were horses then beggars would eat steak.

I'm so entertained watching people's unyielding faith in our intelligence...

While at the same time, some of those same people take President Biden's explanations about the Afghanistan withdrawal at face value, including the claims that it wasn't his fault because the intelligence was bad.

Just believe whatever you're told to think, no matter how much it contradicts other things you've been told to think. That hasn't gotten us in trouble before.

Doesn't make sense to me. Why would US sources lower the Russian casualty figures?

I would respond that it is not that our intelligence service is lacking... it's what the political appointees and contractors (same thing) use it for (it's more abuse than it is use.)

They are more interested in 'creating a perception' than they are in securing the nation. They are more interested in 'how to make it appear [fill in the blank]' than getting control over how it is. They would rather the public think the same...

It's a top-down thing... our leaders think facts don't matter - only perception. It's because they are all 'political' first, rendering substance, to them, a triviality.

The term "military intelligence" is, in itself, an oxymoron.

It makes perfect sense if you assume that the Ukrainian numbers exaggerate Russian casualties while undercounting their own.

If this is what's happening, then the leaked numbers probably represent the US intelligence community's own casualty estimates.

Maybe you're talking about some other version of the leaked numbers. I know there was at least two. But the lower version I saw was ludicrously low. Only 43 dead Russian soldiers per day.

US Is Spying On Zelensky: Here's What's Known So Far From The Leaked Intelligence Files - LINK

"One document reveals that the US has been spying on Zelensky," CNN reports. "That is unsurprising, said the source close to Zelensky, but Ukrainian officials are deeply frustrated about the leak."

The US intelligence document suggests that American officials have been worried about possible Zelensky decision-making to strike deep into Russian territory, which would escalate the war and potentially bring Russian and NATO into direct clashes:

It's nice to see you again.

I would offer a wrinkle. Circumstances have so evolved, over a period of generations, that there is no longer such a thing as "military intelligence" ... it has all become "political" intelligence. (Perhaps because the "political" has infiltrated and overcome the "military.")

And thus, yes, it is oxymoronic, that one should consider anything we see called 'intelligence' as, in any way, an evocation of intelligence.
