Yes, they are waiting for it to go out over the sea. That way they can recover the spy hardware on the balloon and reverse engineer it to figure out how much information China got out of this without endangering civilians on the ground. If they had shot it down over land the way Don Jr. and MJT wanted, that would have destroyed any information value it had and would have endangered citizens on the ground.

Well, I think we have to look at this as a simple demonstration of the fact that the US government has ceded so much of national sovereignty that at this point they don't know when or how to exercise any control over the nation's territory. The borders are open, by reports, the Chinese have set up Police stations in NYC, the Police have turned the cities streets over to the thugs, and the Chinese are buying vast swathes of land across the country.

I would like to see a full meteorology breakdown of the circumstances that supposedly existed in the atmosphere that would cause that balloon to cross the pole and enter Alaska, enter Canada and then enter into the US on its own, traveling the length of the US exiting in the Carolinas. Not what the Chinese have told us, but those that closely monitor world weather.

Could NOAA do it?

We should be able to tell how maneuverable it was, or if it had maneuverability, but had a navigation failure, when they bring back the wreckage.
Some people have said that it may have had the capability to adjust altitude, to catch wind directions at varying altitudes, but, again, we need the wreckage.

Whenever you look at this link it will be different but when I looked at this last week it made sense that it went from China, over Alaska and down to the lower 48. If you look at it now, it makes sense it went over the Carolina's.

If you look at this in a week it won't make sense, it's live data and the jet stream changes.

That is a great observation and you should publish that. Now, of course , knowing that this kind of thing can occur in the Jet stream, can it be predicted, and if so, was it coaxed in there on purpose? That is what they will suspect next.

There is a black hole in the room, and that is if the recovery details will be given to the public. Let us hope that is so, The truth is the only thing that is important, really.

Bit of an overreaction considering both US and China have spy equipment flying over each other every day.

If anything I think this just shows how paranoid and sensitive the American populace has become to think;

a) China would use a balloon to perform anything remotely nefarious
b) Throw a hyperbolic fit over a balloon

Shoot it down early = more panic, fear mongering, dangerous debris
Shoot it down late = weak leadership
Don't shoot it down = chinese puppet

Look we all know China is spying though Tik Tok, social media, maybe even here, BUT it least that isn’t hovering over our heads like a big slap in the face.

Wouldn't it have been more prudent to capture it in one piece? I'm sure a drone could have put a few pin holes in the top so it gently lost altitude, whilst a couple of others could have lassoed a bit of string around the basket to guide it wherever.

But I suppose with blowing it to pieces they can claim it was a super duper highly advanced surveillance craft bag of TERROARRR.
