Was Polybius real? In 1981, an arcade in Portland was the scene of countless gamers coming down with migraines, having heart attacks, seizures and strokes. Local teens were suffering from amnesia and having hallucinations. All due to a mysterious game that seemed to arrive out of thin air.

The game was called Polybius.

And even though playing the game was dangerous, it was highly addictive and caused some teens to become hyper-aggressive.

Fights started breaking out at the arcade. One player was stabbed to death. All traced back to people who played Polybius.

Why would the government allow the public to play such a dangerous game? Because the government created it.

Let's find out why.

I have never heard of this game. It is quite a bizarre story and I was wondering if anyone here remembers playing it.

Yeah and not a single version of the game has ever been found because its not real. FBI involvement trying to catch low level drug sales like pot in an arcade are not the same level of holy 💩 that a cia mind manipulation game would be, if it existed Id own it.

Yeah , it seems to fall under the urban myth category although sometimes they can have a bit of truth. a reply to: Brotherman

The FBI liked to use tempest and were too lazy to hide their actions. So it would make sense a kid/someone high sees a man in black screwing around with a game machine to come up with a crazy theory about secret government shenanigan's. The real world explanation being a combination of laziness and exaggeration.

Although I mostly lean on the side of this not being real this would in no way be the weirdest thing the CIA spent money on

To be fair if a man in a black suit that worked for the fbi came over and started fist f#ing an arcade machine that really is secret government shenanigans.

“Marek Vachousek was the programmer who came up with the name Polybius — he had studied Greek Mythology at Masaryk University and came up with the name because it sounded quite bold and mysterious, which is what we wanted quite simply. The inspiried (sic) graphics combined with the puzzle elements and scintilating (sic) gameplay was something to behold — we playtested it for hours and hours and it certainly was an addictive game that was well-loved professionally and recreationally by all that played it.”

“We then received a phone call stating that there were concerns within the company that the basic graphics which featured prominently in so many other games of the time were fine for the average gamer to spend hours at a time without any noticable (sic) physical or mental detriments but the intense and engrossing gameplay of this new step was very much an unknown quantity so the game was put back several months due to divided opinion within their board of directors, much to our consternation for breaking our backs to finish it on time.”

Myth. Been put to bed many times.
A nice idea but I imagine its lack of cabinets tends towards a lie.
Urban myths etc.
Also , this has been posted previously with the debunking videos attached.
