I’d like to write another story just for the great folks at ATS.
But, to start….

I’m not sure where to post this or if I even should.
I’ll leave that to the Mods and except any decision made.

More than a few ATS members have read my earliest attempts at writing. Some may notice I’m getting better but still have a long way to go before “I’m actually good”.
All my stories come from the years I spent as an Offshore Commercial Fisherman. If you’ve not read any, click my name at the top to see the ones I’ve posted.

Here are a few ideas I have.

1. A true story where Nantucket gets turned upside down when 100 Scallopers tie up and hide from a massive Nor’easter and the alcohol flows.
2. A true story of the Scalloper, Snoopy when it got blown apart catching a torpedo.
3. A true story of battling another Winter Hurricane and getting as close to losing a boat with all hands as a crew can, yet making it home.
4. The day we caught an airplane off Block Island.
5. Stopping in Woods Hole for a few Frosty’s for the steam out. (oh boy, did that go bad!)

Or, would a Q+A thing about commercial fishing, fish or the ocean in general be nice?
What about the shows on tv? How honest are they really?
If so, ask away and if Mods allow it I’ll answer to the best of my abilities.
How about if I just use my imagination and spin a real Yarn?
Give me a subject if you like the last idea….

Cheers……

da pirate 😎

PS. I’ll be happy do more than one but time will be needed.

PSS. Mods, If I have made a mistake making this OP I’ll take my lumps. If so, apologies in advance…

Maybe you could use the old 'rogue wave' scenario, somehow. Or maybe some pi rate who robs legit fishermen.

Nice!

“rogue wave” Kinda did one with a take on The Flying Dutchman.

“Pirates that steal from real Fishermen”

Now that’s a good one!!! Happens. Every. Single. Day.
Back in the day they were known as “Night Flyers”.
Def. food for thought, thanks!

I’ve got one forming in my mind. Treasure on No-man’s Isle.
It lays just South of Martha’s Vineyard and was turned into a bombing range. The island is totally off limits today.

How about a nice, contagious virus story?

Imagine a virus that turns 90 percent of the population into zombies... the surviving 10 percent are left intact physically, yet become violent necrophiliacs at the sight of a corpse.

I'd read it...

ETA: The outbreak begins on a luxury cruise ship, sailing the Bermuda Triangle.

You decided on the title of your “next book” I see.

I read the replies….

Seems you were correct when you typed, “ Dont worry your feckless superiority remains unthreatened, champ.”

Why the hate? Hmmmm?

“ ETA: The outbreak begins on a luxury cruise ship, sailing the Bermuda Triangle”.

Ships Galley got some local food in the Bahamas maybe turning 90 percent of the people on Earth into Creature of The Black Lagoon type of things coming out of bodies of water everywhere….I see it.

That could be spun, it would take work, and time for sure.

Let me go out of my mind for you:

The Scallopers of Nantucket were a hearty and determined bunch, used to braving the rough seas and fierce storms that battered the island. But even they were caught off guard when a massive Nor'easter swept in, bringing with it gale force winds and driving rain.
As the storm raged on, the Scallopers knew they had to take shelter somewhere safe. And so, they did the only thing they could think of: they tied up their boats at the harbor and huddled together in a nearby bar, hoping to ride out the storm in relative comfort.

As the night wore on, the alcohol flowed freely as the Scallopers tried to take their minds off the howling winds and crashing waves outside. They told tales of their adventures at sea, laughed and joked with one another, and tried to keep their spirits up.

But as the storm raged on, it seemed as though Nantucket itself was being turned upside down. Trees were knocked down, roofs were torn off buildings, and debris was scattered everywhere. The Scallopers knew they were lucky to have found shelter, and they vowed to never take the power of the sea for granted again.

The Scalloper Snoopy was a sturdy and reliable vessel, known for its ability to withstand even the roughest of seas. But even it was no match for the force of a torpedo, which blasted through its hull and sent it spiraling down to the depths of the ocean.
The crew of the Snoopy fought bravely to save their boat and themselves, but in the end, it seemed like all was lost. They were forced to abandon ship and cling to flotsam and jetsam as they waited for rescue.

Miraculously, they were eventually picked up by a passing vessel and brought safely back to shore. The Snoopy, however, was a total loss, its remains scattered across the ocean floor.

The crew of the Snoopy were shaken by their close brush with death, but they were also grateful to be alive. They knew they had been lucky, and they vowed to be more careful in the future.

Winter hurricanes are some of the most treacherous and unpredictable storms at sea, and the Scallopers of Nantucket knew this all too well. They had braved their fair share of such storms, but none had tested them quite like the one that hit on a cold and blustery day in January.
As the storm raged on, the Scallopers fought to keep their boat afloat, battling waves that seemed to be trying to swallow them whole. They were tossed and turned, battered and beaten, but they refused to give up.

At one point, it seemed as though they were as close to losing their boat and their lives as they could be. But somehow, they managed to hold on, riding out the storm and making it back to shore in one piece.

The Scallopers were battered and bruised, but they were also relieved and grateful to be alive. They knew they had been through a harrowing ordeal, and they vowed to be more prepared for such storms in the future.

The Scallopers of Nantucket were always up for a challenge, and they loved nothing more than a good adventure. So when they heard about a group of fishermen who had caught an airplane off the coast of Block Island, they knew they had to try their luck as well.
They set out on a calm and sunny day, determined to prove that they could catch an airplane just like their rivals. As they fished, they kept a close eye on the skies, hoping to spot their quarry.

And eventually, their persistence paid off. As they fished, they kept a close eye on the skies, hoping to spot their quarry. And eventually, their persistence paid off.

To their amazement, they saw a small plane flying low over the water, struggling to stay aloft. The Scallopers knew they had to act fast, and they sprang into action.

They quickly pulled in their lines and started their engines, racing towards the plane as it began to lose altitude. As they drew closer, they could see the pilot frantically waving at them, trying to signal for help.

The Scallopers knew they had to act quickly if they were going to save the pilot. They pulled alongside the plane and, with great effort, managed to haul it aboard their boat.

The pilot was shaken but grateful, and the Scallopers were hailed as heroes. They returned to Nantucket with their prize, and the story of their unlikely catch became the talk of the island.

Stopping in Woods Hole for a few Frosty's was a tradition for the Scallopers of Nantucket, a chance to rest and relax after a long day at sea. But on one particular trip, things took a turn for the worse.
As the Scallopers sat at the bar, enjoying their frosty drinks and each other's company, they couldn't help but overhear the heated argument taking place at the next table. It seemed that two fishermen had gotten into a disagreement over the size of a catch, and things were quickly escalating.

Before they knew it, the argument had turned into a full-blown fight, with fists flying and chairs being thrown. The Scallopers knew they had to get out of there before things got any worse, and they quickly made their exit.

But as they tried to make their escape, they found themselves caught in the middle of the fracas. They were pushed and pulled, knocked around and bruised, as they tried to navigate their way through the chaos.

In the end, they made it out of the bar unscathed, but not before vowing never to stop for a Frosty in Woods Hole again.

Have a good one. C'Man.

A true story, a ship's captain called Carlos - a Greek - who went down on a rusty tub, it was sinking and they were out to sea but the helicopter that came could only take so many crewmen, despite being a young man himself Carlos made sure all the crewmembers got up onto the rescue helicopter that could then not take any more because it could hardly fly with so many on board, there was no time to get back to save him as the ship was going down, don't know what happened to the life rafts if there were any on that old freighter but he went down with the ship, back in the early 80's - My nephew's REAL father, he's called Carl after his REAL father but his mother kept the story from him so I told him it as best I could.

The sea has many tales that are true, tales of heroes that gave up there lives to save others, think of the musicians on the Titanic who knew they were going to die but played on until they could no more, think of the poor souls locked in the lower class deck's including woman and children abandoned as the rich on less than half full lifeboats sailed away from the sinking ship.

OR you could go the whole Ulysses' route, throw in a dimensional portal - pretty sure a few science fiction movies have already done that but a new take is always good.

A true book about REAL hero's at sea including lifeguards that gave there lives OR a compendium of tales by seamen telling of there lives at sea and the heroic, tragic and hilarious things they have seen, if taking those story's from fishermen you could give it the name a compendium of fishermen's tales heroics and hilarity on the high seas, brave men.

Other than that no real idea.

How about finding an ancient star fleet all left by a long lost people who settled the earth OR Were exiled to there home planet or at least a planet so long ago that the sediment that has covered them has turned to stone but somehow an oil prospecting ship accidentally finds one, cue a secret mission by some spy agency, experts flown in and finding a hidden history that scares the crap out of them but also offers technology's and science beyond anything they know, a secret mission to recover one of the ancient vessels to take it to some hidden facility, problem is the smallest is miles in length.

I'm always a sucker for a good true story, the Perfect Storm was a fantastic book, the Andrea Gail and Billy Tyne, even though the movie took some artistic license it was still a good movie.

but I'm a huge Cussler fan too. There's something about the sea, the being relatively alone makes for great fiction too.

It's always cool to weave fiction with nonfiction, or military-related stories Id really dig to hear the story of the boat that got hit by a torpedo. I'm thinking it has to be a Nazi U boat, they had to come across commercial fishermen all the time
in the North Atlantic.

Nonfiction perhaps a down-on-their-luck scalloper gets thrust into a life-threatening situation. Hell get Johhny Depp to play the character and in the end, we find out the hero/Depp was actually related to Jack Sparrow.

Hell Disney could pick it up and put it on their streaming channel, or possibly sue for copyright infringement.

Perhaps a modern shipwreck story? Life of Pi stuff or a lost boat ends up in the artic, right where Russia is messing around.

I do believe an afternoon spent on the porch with you trading stories would be great fun!
My porch has seen untold hours of stories from many folks of many backgrounds told on it.
In the end the stories all return to the sea.
Last week a good friend had family visiting from Ohio for a Pre-Christmas vacation and he brought then by for chit chat. It never fails to amaze me how people who have never even looked upon the sea can be so smitten by it.
That and how intelligently they can converse over it as well.
Know what I’ve found these folks enjoy the most?
The stories where men are fighting for their lives out there, the terror of it. Next comes the beauty I’ve seen, like freeing a Humpback from a high-flyer and downline off a lobster trawl.
I hope you write!
Thank you all for these replies. They feed my mind!!!
