Kiev was Russias first major city looking at antique maps of the classical world. Then Poland took it under their empire. In the meantime russians settle new cities and eventually regain Kiev, Poland is broken up. Poland comes back later as one, but does not include Kiev. The area around to the North moves around with Lithuania and Poland, but Kiev stays Russian.

My french maps of the classic world show the name ukraine showing up for the first time after treaties in 1926.
No older maps printed from just after WW1 have the name Ukraine in it until 1926.

They were flying into a hot zone? war zone?

Let me help you abate your fears, there will not be any nuclear exchange.

I wouldn't be so sure. If Putin is fool enough to drop a nuke on Ukrainian soil, his troop concentrations (on Ukrainian soil) might become a retaliatory target.

Doubtful anyone from the Nuclear Club is foolish enough to drop one directly over Russian soil though.
