Hello ATS!

I decided today to digress from the topic of Ukraine and tell you about the largest energy project in the world, which Russia has begun to implement. In the future, this project will allow it to become a virtual monopoly in the production of environmentally friendly "green" renewable energy.

In the extreme North-East of Russia, between the Kamchatka Peninsula and mainland Russia, in the Magadan region, there is the Penzhina Bay. It is located in the very "foundation" of Kamchatka. In the place where it "joins" with the mainland

Most people have not heard anything about this lip, but meanwhile - it is the champion of the entire Pacific Ocean in terms of the height of the tides. The height of the tides reaches 13 meters. At the same time, the water area of the Penzhina Bay is 21,000 square kilometers (comparable to the area of Crimea).

Thus, if you calculate, it turns out that up to 500 cubic kilometers of water moves through the "gates" of the bay every day. For comparison:
- the Volga river carries such an amount of water in 2 years
- Don River - for 25 years
- Amazon River - in 25 days

The essence of the Penzhina tidal power plant (PES) is that it is blocked by a dam, at the base of which generators are mounted. At high tide, the generators work in one direction, at low tide - in the other.

I will try to compare the calculated electric potential of the TPP in the Penzhina Bay with other stations.

- Power unit of the Chernobyl nuclear power plant (which exploded) - 1 gigawatt / hour (1 billion watt / hour).
- All 4 units of the nuclear power plant that Russia is building in Turkey - 4.8 GWh
- The most powerful HPP in Russia (Sayano-Shushenskaya) - 6.4 GW/h
- The most powerful power plant in the world (Chinese "Three Gorges", the construction of which even slightly slowed down the rotation of the globe) - 22.5 GW / h

So, the electric potential of the Penzhinskaya TPP is over 100 GW/h.

Advantages of PES

- Does not emit carbon dioxide and has no emissions at all
- Has a 100% renewable (endless) energy source
- Safe from the point of view of disasters, tk. in which case, no one dies, nothing gets polluted, nothing gets flooded, etc.
- Produces very low cost of electricity. Compared to solar and wind, it is generally free, one might say

There are two main projects under consideration:

- Northern alignment (21 GW)
- South alignment (87 GW)

As well as a dam that will connect Kamchatka with the mainland by a land highway.

The cost of the project is 60 billion dollars.

There were many projects on where to put and how to transport such a huge amount of energy, especially given the extreme remoteness of the TPP from the main consumption centers. settled on a construction project near the Northern alignment of a plant for the production of hydrogen. from sea water. In the future, hydrogen is planned to be liquefied and transported by gas carriers to anywhere in the world.
Yes, the cost of producing hydrogen is very energy intensive, but with this amount of practically free energy, it is very cost-effective.

Thus, the Penzhinskaya TPP becomes a kind of planetary battery.

Thank you.

I'm confused. Do you think I envy Vlad's choice to kill lots of kids? I don't. I think his decision to go into Ukraine was the dumbest thing he could have possibly did. Laughably stupid.

But the wave harvesting is smart, and will be a great source of renewable energy. That's not so much envy as it is, just a thumbs up.

It only takes one "aw sh!t" to erase 10 "ataboy's". His war is a gargantuan "aw sh!t". But I still enjoy your input here, do please don't take my distain for your leader for a dislike of you. (our leader is a dipsh!t too)

This is actually kinda cool and makes sense for Russia's pivot to Asia. If they are producing that much clean energy, they can connect to China, and feed China the energy, while at the same time enhance the infrastructure in the far east which traditionally has not seen many resources allocated to them. They could theoretically feed China, Japan, and Korea with that, if they were so inclined to do so. It divests their economy from fossil fuels, and makes them stronger. Makes sense in my book.

I hope the project is successful. The weather there is extreme but I figure some of the smart fellows in Russia can figure out how to make that work .

I had a friend who retrieved a WW2 Japanese aircraft from that region and without the Mafia he did not think he would have ever gotten the aircraft out of there. Government wanted bribes and money at every step to include the loading dock.. Mafia wanted a one time payment and a hand shake...the deal was done. Those were some exciting times way back when.

I met the guy who was in charge of the Russian Space Shuttle program when he was visiting Florida. I do not remember much about him other than he was a decent smart guy... His young female interpreter was beautiful and one hot lady who seemed very considerate and warm hearted . If I had not been married.........?

How many people are like me and know Kamchatka mainly because of the game Risk? Or at least first heard of it from Risk.

I suspect they will be critizized for this Green project instead of praised. Much like Tesla is now.

The Governor of the Sakhalin Region Valery Limarenko said that the Danish company Copenhagen Offshore Partners wants to lease one of the Kuril Islands called Shumshu, which is located at the southern tip of Kamchatka. The company is going to produce hydrogen there using wind energy. The Danes plan to sell the resulting hydrogen to Japan and South Korea.
Copenhagen Offshore Partners plans to build a wind farm in the Kuriles. Shumshu is almost flat, and the wind constantly blows on it, which is a prerequisite for windmills.

Dams in general are already being said for years by some environmentalists to be not that green. They are greener than burning fossil fuels, which is important, but the fluctuating water levels behind a dam are a major contributor to the worlds' methane emissions from the growth-and-decay of plants. Dams also create environmental damage by flooding animal habitats and cutting off fish routes.

How ‘Green’ Is Hydropower?

Hydropower is NOT Clean Energy: Dams and Reservoirs are Major Drivers of Climate Change

Opinion: There’s nothing green about dams. The federal infrastructure bill should tear them down

Just like solar farms are not green?

Just like wind turbines are not green?

Just like electric cars are not green?

I applaud russia for their effort, I hope they can make it work.

China is planning to build a mega dam that will make more power than their three gorges dam, something like three times the power.

Why didn't Russia just concentrate on this great works and challenge China to see who could build their mega dam first instead of feeding the fire in ukraine over petty genetic differences and tribalism?

If the normal tide is 40 feet then everything gets under water twice a day anyway. So time will tell but it sounds good.

A picture is emerging....America is considered the world super-power that's used up or locked away it's resources and become stagnant. Russia has some innovative plans that could raise its standing to world super power if not stopped.

Can't let that happen, now can we Biden + world leaders?

Ummm...why didn't the US and Europe concentrate on solving their inherent infrastructure and other problems...instead of having 108 wars and conflicts since WWII...?

Why didn't the US fund more green projects or their crumbling infrastructure with the 50 billion they're using to kill more Ukrainians and Russians with...?

The US and Europe really love to sanction countries at the drop of a hat...yet can't seem to realize that the only ones adversely affected are their own citizens and the citizens of the sanctioned countries...

They must be really proud of the cannibalization they cause amongst the citizenry in places like North Korea...

Apparently even Russia see's the need for cleaner energy...and is doing something about it...so Kudo's to them as they step away from the west...and into the open arms of Asia...and Africa...and South America...

Ummm...the projected tidal generators could be completely submerged...and still take full advantage of the tidal current...

It would also be easier for a submerged vehicle to replace any defective units...than for a surface vessel as it rises and falls with the 30 meter waves...

This is impressive!

In the meantime over here in the US, gas costs are out of control.

We keep hearing about electric cars (is there infinite lithium available)? Green this, green that, money being sent to arm a war that we shouldn’t be involved in that could have gone to our infrastructure.

Bravo Russia!

You know I agree with you. But this isn't about the US being world police and sanctioning anything that doesn't fit their capitalist imperialist machine.

But it still doesn't excuse Russia for what they did, and still doing.

That is a pretty big project. Could they possibly only go partially across and still create a lot of energy.
