So, I vote no.

BBC News - The world's first octopus farm - should it go ahead?
www.bbc.co.uk...

I have always thought that these amazing creature are both sentient and highly intelligent. Sadly, they only live for about four years.

I'm no tree hugging veggie but I have always thought it wrong to kill and eat them and this farm appalls me.

Recommend watching "My Octopus Teacher" it's on Netflix.

Amazing.

Sounds like it would not be profitable to grow one octopus at a time, maybe they should make an octopi farm.

I am on the fence.
They are obviously more intelligent than most people believe that they are, but I am not sure where to draw the line.

People think it started with planet of the apes, nope!

The octopus' wrote it to distract us.

They are extremely intelligent, so leave them alone is my stance.

You have a point. It's tricky. I feel the same about pigs, but, bacon?

When planting octopus seeds, you need the right soil conditions AND the right time of year.

SCIENCE!

I agree with you.
I have always hoped one day we will be able to communicate with some of the more intelligent sea creatures like octopi and dolphins, but I bet we would not feel good if they told us what they think of us two legged land weirdos.

I like this part of the article:

Humans and octopuses had a common ancestor 560 million years ago, and evolutionary biologist Dr Jakob Vinther, from the University of Bristol, also has concerns.
"We have an example of an organism that has evolved to have an intelligence that is extremely comparable to ours." Their problem-solving abilities, playfulness and curiosity are very similar to those of humans, says Dr Vinther - and yet they're otherworldly.
"This is potentially how it would look if we were ever going to meet an intelligent alien from a different planet."

www.bbc.co.uk...

We should be learning more about them not eating them IMO.

I think they are tasty, albeit a little rubbery. Sentient? I'd dine on humans if it was culturally acceptable.

Its the same thing with cows, chickens, rabbits, and pigs. They easily become your friend, and things change.

I lived on Maui when I was 20. I was camping on the windward side, fishing, gathering fruit, and living off the land. I was out on the lava flow, hanging on carefully, with both hands, and holding my knife in my teeth. I was looking for shell fish, or what ever, to eat. I look in this hole in the lava, and there is an octopus in there! I quickly grabbed my knife, and stabbed him in the head! Right as I did that, I got hit with an unexpected giant wave ( the 7th wave) that went over me completely. I dropped my knife into the sea, and was able to grab another hand hold and stay anchored. As the water receded, I looked in the hole in the lava, and saw the octopus was gone. Then I looked down and realized that the octopus was wrapped around my leg. You never saw anybody climb up the lava so fast as I did. I was up there kicking my leg real fast to get that thing off of there. They have beaks. It didnt bite me though. It really did taste good.

Yea Im not a fan of Octopi farming their intelligence, and situational awareness is legendary in some cases Is there a huge need for it in the UK? We protect dolphins and manatees

I couldn't see it being hugely popular here in the states, I remember them pushing emu, and ostrich it never took hold. They don't taste bad either but I reckon the beef industry probably frowns on it and regulated it out of competition. You still can find emu/ostrich farms here in Georgia and South Carolina and many of the farms by pass grocery stores and sell direct.

I would imagine Octopi would be an even smaller niche market, I enjoy sushi Sea Urchin is amazing and Im usually a steak or prime rib kind of guy. That said I have ordered seafood and fish directly from PNW and it was excellent as well. Octopi I don't know, but Im not exactly a fan of calamari either though it seems preparation and freshness are the keys.

Reminds me of the old Monty Python sketch, where the hunter says he loves animals, that's why he eats them, LOL

Because of the intelligence, octopus and squid are the only food I don't eat, so agree with not farming them. Catching wild when stocks are good is probably ok if others want to eat them. Everything is food ultimately.

I didn't find they taste very good anyhow and the texture like rubber, though calamari is much better when prepared right.
