Also, in the English speaking domains, there seems to be a heavy misfortune wished to Russians.

Much of that is in the realm of politics, and even people who should be well informed engage in stupid bickering. Russian officials, I note, are no better in that regard.

On the people level, the "Anglos" I know simply see the Russians as another people. They have their own ways that seem to work well enough for them. Personally, certain aspects of Russia, and Russian people, impress me quite a bit.

I understand that some national borders in Europe split several groups of people from the nations that they considered themselves to be a part of.
French speaking Germans and vice versa - Alsace-Lorraine has been a contested region for a long time.
There are significant foreign speaking regions throughout France/Italy/Germany/Switzerland etc.

No disrespect but I find it hard to accept that Hitler in 1938 would cower down to Mussolini's demands that ethnic Germans abandon their German ancestry etc or be deported. Hitler was very much the dominant partner by 1938 and this sort of goes against everything we know of Hitler.

I'm sure Hitler would have been in favour of some sort of Aryanisation of The Crimea, but under those terms?

Real fascism in Europe was in Portugal and Italy. In Germany, Hitler's party was called the National Socialist Labor Party. When people talk about fascism in Germany, I usually smile ironically. There was Nazism. The Pope's support for Hitler was quite strange. It is difficult for us, in Russia, to understand the relationship between states at that time; practically all of Europe was against us in that war. And it's hard for me to understand why Hitler was inferior to Mussolini on the issue of the Tyrolean Germans, although then he simply saved him from imprisonment in the Alps with the help of Otto Skorzeny's operation.

Does this really happen often? My only experience is being British and on holiday.

The world is usually accommodating although admittedly I think we take the piss occasionally.

British English comes to mind. We had and still have a load of dialects but they've been eroded in a very purposeful manner over the centuries.

Language and cultures naturally evolve yet it's well worthy of note that they can be artificially altered too. Cultural genocide comes to mind... Interesting thread, I love history like this and the echoes still heard from our past.

We drove from Moscow in a luxurious Mercedes of the latest S-class model, bought food, drinks and meat in a supermarket. We arrived and decided to fry a barbecue from meat in the courtyard of their house.

Russian hospitality. Many things not that complicated, being together is what counts more than formalities. Isn't it the daily scandals, that remind us we are all just faulty human beings? Allowing the number 5 be an even one and see past the facade, with all god and bad habits.

German Gref is a person who, on behalf of the World Bank and the world government, represents their interests in Russia. Earlier this position was held by Chubais. Gref, through his products, wants to replace the functions of the state with his Sberbank.
The paradox is that, just as earlier the removal and arrest of Chubais, so now, Gref, is possible only in the event of an open war between the West and Russia. We still have to endure it in order to maintain balance and not slide into war. It is difficult, but such are the Russian realities now.
But the situation is changing rapidly. Because of its sanctions, the West is losing leverage over Russia, which means that it itself is pushing it onto a nationally oriented course.
In my opinion, until there is an open war, Russia will tolerate systemic liberals in power. Although their influence has been rapidly shrinking lately, like pebbled skin.

Hitler's party could have been called the Sasquatch Beaver Benevolent Society; it's relationship with business and capital and power tells us it was fascist.

The Pope's support for Hitler - and Franco before him - is understandable and well documented. He stood for the forces of conservatism against the godless Bolshevik hordes. That's why many German Catholics signed up and why Catholic padres gave communion to SS troops on the front line.
