My son (whom I'm going to disown after I stop sobbing) said that we need another Welshie but name it Frodo so he can continue the journey.

I know you're in pain, DB. Your sorrow is contagious and reminiscent for many of us, but I think your son is coping with his own grief in a pragmatic, creative and probably, his best way of being respectful towards Bilbo and keeping him in his heart.

Another pup will never be Bilbo, but you've all been exemplary pet owners, so why not turn the hurt into love for another needy soul?

I don't mean to preach, only soul-searching our own mistakes after our Lucky passed and we didn't have the courage to pick up one of the many strays that crossed our path, and were possibly gifts from heaven that we ignored.

So sorry db.
I’ve got dogs and cats. Always had one or two or 6 all my life.
It’s painful when they go. Such personalities, so easy to love.
Even the goofy ones.
My best to you.

My wife wants to start a charitable foundation called "Bilbo's Buddies".

Too many people have pets and don't have the extra 400, 800. 1200 dollars for emergency vet bills. Possible treatments that could save the lives of pets but people just don't have the money.

So either pets suffer or they are put down.

My wife wants to make sure that any animal that can be treated, will be treated.

It's not too late. Yes, they were gifts from heaven. Whenever I lose a cat, I say I won't get another because it hurts too much to lose them...Next thing you know it, I'm adopting or rescuing a new kitty. They are as individual and unique as humans, each with their own personality.

I have a Siamese that will be 13 in November. We got him when he was 7. He talks a LOT, is very expressive, beautiful and so filled with love. He demands attention, snuggles and kisses all the time. It's like having a toddler in the house.

I am sorry for your loss. I have lost, due to age, a few of my dogs in the past and it is painful. Today my small chihuahua, ran out the door, someone had let the door open, and we almost lost our minds trying to find him. Thankfully he was alright. Pets are part of people's family, and when we lose one is like losing a member of he family.

I am so truly sorry for your loss DB. We lost our oldest cocker spaniel, Daisy, last August after 16 years. They give so much love and ask for nothing in return. As my sister said to me “they only break your heart once.” It’s eight months now and I can honestly say that I can look back and remember her with so much happiness. Of course this post made me cry though as I know that pain and the void that’s left behind. You were blessed to have each other for the short time you were together. I hope the pain lessens with each day and soon you can look back with nothing but love and happiness for your best friend.

I am sorry for your loss. People who never have had the privilege of having a canine companion don't realize they are more than pets, but become a big part of the family.

Again, I am sorry for your loss. He seemed like a great little guy.
