Know this is "a thing" but have yet to experience it.

I don't use Siri, I refuse to bluetooth enable phone & vehicle, do not have phone connected to laptop. My son-in-law snorts that things are connected yet I have no apps on phone proven recently when a group of people all got Covid & despite many being in my contacts list I was not notified.
Probably should note I refuse to use social media on my phone.

I also don't get ads for anything I discuss. Kind sad since that would maybe make internet shopping easier.
Only thing annoying is my phone constantly wants me to sign in to google, but I just keep canceling out those requests.

One question to those that have seen this happen: do you live in the EU?

I ask because of the EU's General Data Protection Regulation that has been in force for the last couple of years. One result is that most sites present a possibility of refusing their cookies and some show a list of "partners" that may receive information from our usage, and some of those lists are huuuuuge, with hundreds and hundreds of companies.

I always try to avoid all cookies, but some sites do not really follow the regulation and do not allow the removal of specific cookies.

It's very freaky indeed.
It's happened to me a few times. Have you tried deliberately thinking about something odd to try and make it happen?
I did but nothing happens. It's only happened when I thought about random, irrelevant things but freaky all the same. It's only happened when I think about something then later I get a YouTube video recommended for that topic.

As regards the advertising side of this, it's useless for me. Most of the things I buy online are books on paranormal topics or music CDs and vinyl.
Not once have I seen an ad for anything remotely useful to me.

Your smart TV is much smarter than you ever dreamed possible. Big Brother is watching and Alexa is listening.

It’s a thing. For sure.

I hate it. It’s creepy. And it sure AF doesn’t make me any better at being a good little materialistic consumer-drone

This is synchronicity. Thoughts are things.

They might even be alive and interact...

If you are logged into google/apple/yahoo whatever on a single device, it can run in the background incessantly without logging out, deleting cookies, etc. etc. so no matter what you can feel you've logged out of one service but it can still be communicating in the background. The other thing is these services have gotten so advanced in their AI that they can guess what things you would be interested in before you even realize it. I think there definitely is some passive listening happening, and most companies allow you to go in and either limit it, turn it off, or delete the recordings. Amazon makes this pretty easy, but you have to actively do these steps and then stay on top of it.

I agree. Me and my two sons have been dropping hints for scuba gear this last couple of days. We're waiting for the out come. You've all been going on about adverts appearing because the devices listen to you, but the bigger picture is just who else is listening and logging your conversations. Echelon has moved on in leaps and bounds.

Install Wireshark on a PC on your network. Turn off everything on the network except your phone and internet gateway.

WATCH. Find your shocked face, right now.

It's not Social Media.

It's time to start calling it what it is, Social Conditioning.

Yes, this started like 10 years ago.
Facebook messenger does this for sure.
They got called out and still do it anyway.
The cheap Amazon kindle tablets do it.
Any app with mic or cam permissions can do it.
Most "smart" devices can do it. Especially TVs.
Before all the microphone/cam equipped devices, they could actually
reverse speaker polarity and listen back through the devices.
