Fortunately besides formerly owning a permaculture farm...my 2nd wife suffers from a seed buying addiction, whereas my 1st wife bought nothing but shoes!

We have countless pounds of every possible seed you can think of ( many which most folks have never heard of). I seal them up for long term storage and add to the stock as available.

We approach most perishabkes and foodstuffs etc..in a pantry manner in order to not run out...hopefully

Do the hybrid seeds grow again?
I don't do gardening but I seem to remember something about the hybrids not doing as well after the first planting.

Hybrids plants sometimes don't reseed well (some are sterile), and if they do they aren't true to the parent plant.
I stick with Heirlooms.

Your wife and I would be great friends.
I love unique plants.

This year I'm trying something new... Sesame seed!
I am going to grow them and buy a hand crank expeller to see if I can make my own sesame oil.
We'll see if it is a success.

What about toilet paper?

🤷‍♂️

We all have that covered already. Dont you remember? WE will be using US currency notes for that

When you grow your gardens, save seeds from very ripe fruit and vegies. My son and I both have our own seed collections. Mine is in a large special craft case, with about 20 smaller individual labeled cases that fit neatly inside. I have hundreds of packs, as does my son. I also have grocery bags of bulk seeds I produced.

I did a really cool cross, I havnt had a chance to run yet. I pollenated a Purple collard tree, with pollen from a kale. They are both in the brassica family, and purple collard is a super food tree ( somewhat rare) that produces awesome cabbage flavored leaves year round on a tree that grows up to 10 feet or so.
Purple collard is usually grown from cuttings, because it is very rare for them to seed.

A small grove of those trees could feed your family healthy, high vitamin, mineral, nutrient rich food that tastes pretty darn good, even raw.

I think there is an old saying about people going nuts after missing three meals.

Not really, I went about 17 or 18 days without 'food' once, before I seen any affects.

Be sure and grab some ginger, and turmeric rhizomes at the store. Dont forget all types of potatoes, yams, and sweet potatoes, garlic, elephant garlic etc. In a pinch, I have done well with store bought potatoes, rather then seed potatoes. In fact, all sprouted potatoes and yams go into the garden regardless the time of year

I should have been more clear.
I didn't mean they went insane as much as that's when they panic and start rioting.

You were fine, I mean it's like making or planting a garden, while thinking nothing will go wrong. lol

I enjoy what you post.

Of course things can go wrong but history (great depression), even modern history (Venezuela) shows us those with gardens fared much better than those without.
Mind you, if things get to the point where you have to leave your home, you'll have to do the best you can. I'm guessing that seeds will still have some sort of value in that scenario too.

The Victory Seed Company out of Oregon, the guys I bought tobacco seeds from, they sent me a post card warning to buy now due to shortages. They aren't even printing a catalog this year, just online sales. Good thing I save seeds, but I am looking to buy more.

We are big into Gumweeds (Grindelia spp) the last couple years, as we love collecting different resins for use in our herbal practices.

We were able to get starts going successfully of the exceedingly rare California bay laurel ( we live in S. Oregon near the Redwood Forest very unique zone).

👍

Mullein leaf is one of the best amelioritives for sore muscles, its incredible for opening the airways incshortness of breath and the root is used dried and powdered with powdered black walnut hull as a fish stunner by native Americans. Mullein flower of course is fantastic for ear infections extracted with garlic in olive oil.

We have them all over the place out here. I just love the way they look, almost majestic on native fields.
I let one in the yard flower/go to see last fall, we'll see how many pop up this year.

Save some leaves to dry out and crush like tobacco. Good for lung congestion when smoked like cigarette or in a pipe (bronchitis or sinusitis).

Holy Smokes (pun intended)
I just looked online and the dried crushed stuff is going to top dollar!
Guess I won't run it over with the mower anymore!!

Seriously, if you plan on gardening get your seeds now.

Shortages are already occurring and it is still really early.

I've still got this weird bag of seeds that showed up on my front porch. Funny foreign writing on it. What'cha think?

Were they from China?
I guess they sent them to lots of people all over the US. At first everyone freaked out thinking they were some kind of biological weapon or invasive plants, but turns out they were just some weird marketing scheme.
Either way, I probably wouldn't risk it.
