Absolutely, I work in programing but point of sale, our servers majority are windows based and we have seen an ungodly amount of service issues based on the windows issues. Run the scandisk, if you can get it to load first thing turn all updates off. Then set a new restore point for the system. Like you mentioned there is an issue in 10 and for some reason restore points are no longer auto- Another great reason for the founder of garbage to be running point on anything of importance let alone global. Good luck

Just noticed your signature. Epic. I love it. I failed to mention chkdisk is like a browse scandisk is like a full on audit with ability to repair. Depending on your occupied disk space and installed programs it will take a while but, if you have any major corruption it can find and typically repair.

Exactly. Trying to get the old hard drive/OS running like this is like working on a car with the engine running.

Check msconfig and ensure nothing nefarious in either startup or services you don’t recognise / non Microsoft services.

If you don’t know how let me know which version of Windows you’re running. Turn off non essential services and then phase them in gradually to see if it’s a specific service causing the issue.

Failing that, backup your personal files and re-install windows. Once windows starts playing up the firefighting never ends. If the problem continues after fresh install at least then you know it’s hardware related.

Results chkdsk
It repaired a couple of bad sectors, then....
Error 75736e6a726e6c2e 500
And
"Failed to transfer logged messages to the event log with status 6"

Ran scannow
"Windows Resource Protection could not perform operation"

So, what the hell!!! We turn off and restart....why not lolol
And
It resumed the update, from where it left off previously?!?!?

Doing cleanup now, but taking quite a while....
We'll see......

You have bad sectors so the drive is basically on its last legs, drives have a remap area for the odd error which doesn't even show to the user but once you start getting errors appearing it means that area is full and you should get anything important off it NOW!!

Now at least make sure you have an (or several) back up of the stuff that's important. So any failure of equipment is annoying but not a catastrophe.

Thanks....and will do doing that...
and like this weekend!
It should not take 12+ hours to do MS updates....that should have been a warning sign last month.

Make a backup of documents and other in important things.
But remember , EVERY SINGLE DRIVE MADE has spare sectors to remap bad sectors to .
In fact , there has never been a mechanical drive manufactured that did not have bad sectors from the start .
I have been running a SATA 3 drive for 5 years now with 36 bad sectors (over the spares)
Mostly , SMART drive will let you know on a failing disk.
Or Windows.

Edit to Add : Windows sees both bad blocks (software) and bad sectors (hardware) as bad sectors....

That reminds me of what happened some years ago at work.

One day a computer didn't start, so they called me to solve the problem. When I got there I saw that there was a warning from the BIOS stating that there was an irrecoverable error (or something like that) on the disk. I asked if they had noticed something wrong with the computer and the person that usually used that computer told me that it always gave an error message about the disk, but they just pressed a key to continue and didn't bother with what the error could be.

Obviously, they lost all they had on that disk (which should be nothing special, as they were supposed to save all important work on the server, for which there was backups, but no backups for the individual PCs).

And if you format the disk you can avoid the bad sectors.

I had a computer with two half disks, one had the first half unusable, the other the second half, but those good halves kept on working without a problem for some years more, until I stopped using that computer.
