5 Ways to Access Windows 10 Boot Options Menu

Any time.
I really don't know much about computers anymore. I don't know how you went to being an administrator here on ATS and not get compensation for an almost flawless computer.
I did in fact buy a brand new HP laptop 3 years ago with the fastest processor built in. But the problem has been Windows 10. Bestbuy wouldn't fix it, i was told to contact HP, HP told me to contact a Microsoft rep. So yes I have a laptop colecting dust. Files and important photos are lost.

Wish I could get the original XP back😔

Try running BSOD (blue screen of death) www.wikihow.com...

If that does not work you can boot form the bios screen if you have your windows 10 disk, or on removable hardware.
Try the above first as with the second you will likely lose things.

If nothing helps. Browse on over to the bleeping computer forums and post your issue there. There's some very knowledgeable people that can assist. You might just end up having to reinstall windows if it can't be fixed. But you can always get a new hard drive and a hard drive enclosure. Install windows on the new hard drive. Put the old hard drive into the enclosure and extract the old data from it.

In the future make a hard drive image and save that to a external drive. A few months ago my laptop got messed up. I had to restore from image to get it working again.

I used clonezilla to make the image.

Even if the drive was failing, the bios should come up just fine. The HD doesn't come into play until after the bios does it's thing.

Reading the posts, I can't tell if you can even get the OS to start. If it does, just reset the thing and set it as on a metered network so it doesn't update, run it for a few weeks to see if there's a physical issue and then turn the metered network off. I turn off metered network once a month for updates until MS fixes what they broke with the last update.

My win 10 has had issues in the past with updates and various "issues" that you may hear stories about me causing so I just reset the thing back to fresh install.

I have two eight or nine year old HP 8510 laptops that I salvaged from a former employee when they were taken out of service after five years. One is running Win10 and one is running Win7. The Win10 machine (the one I normally use) doesn't any issues, never has since new. It keeps up with MS updates just fine, even those stupid-long updates going to v1909. When I have installed Windows on this I used a clean full install from a network share for Win7 and a thumb drive for Win10. I also have a same-age HP desktop that I did the same on, no issues with that either. But I've been using HP equipment since the Compaq days so it's been a couple of decades and the business class machines are my preference.

This IS doesn't start.
We tried that reset, it failed.

Could you explain metered network?
Sounds interesting

My current Dell desktop is the business model.
And my previous refurbed was a business model.
They both work better than consumer computers I've had.

Is this info helpful:
www.ubackup.com...

If Startup Repair can’t solve the problem, you can go to “Command Prompt” under “Advanced options” to repair Windows 10. In the command prompt window, if you need to repair damaged system files, type “sfc /scannow /offbootdir=d: /offwindir=d:windows” and hit “Enter” key. If you need to rebuild BCD settings, you can run the following commands:

bootrec /fixmbr

bootrec /fixboot

bootrec /rebuildbcd

Of course, NO IDEA what BCD means LOLOL. I mean, how do I know what I want to fix?????

Also, to avoid this in the future, how do I backup....can I do it to a memory stick.....how big does it need to be.

The steps above can lead to a different error stating you dont have the rights or permissions etc. Its a bigger mess to solve that problem if you encounter it. Your updates are taking forever likely because your laptop is terrible and the updates are failing ( rolling back ). HP does not make even 1 decent consumer grade laptop. Next time your puter is "asleep" try plugging in an external monitor to be sure its not a gpu reflow issue. If hdd is a problem you will see an error in the system event viewer with type DISK. check your system event log. Filter for critical and error. See if there is anything recent and post back.

If chkdsk c: returns errors (that will not fix them)

Well , the correct way to run checkdisk , from a command prompt in these cases , is chkdsk c: /f /r
The /f is for fix , and the /r is for repair.
However , if there is a bunch of data corruptionthe problem may get worse.
If check disk does not find any issues , let me know
There is still a way around this (possibly)

Has Malwarebytes anything it wants to quarantine in any case?

As for error, 0x800070017 I think that a PUP add on app may be responsible. findmymaps is one such possibility

just to add...those P.U.P.s are nasty attaching from who knows where...thanks

Another option. Take the computer to a repair shop. Have windows stripped completely off the hard drive and re installed.

That's what I did when I had a virus. The tech reinstalled a clean updated windows 10 without all of the garbage programs. Works great. Costs $150

Lot's of fraud going on you have to be careful.

Don't want to force you into Linux but what helped me a lot with windows failures was plugging in a Linux Live USB. Then you could access all files, back these up* and nuke the HDD. Ok not nuke just format and reinstall the windows you prefer.

* = that's the most important stuff. Have access to all your files and safely secure them on another external device.

Do you have a cat?

I know you might think im kidding but, serious (especially if not neutered)...

I had a similar problem once

Was not laptop but PC that I had upgraded, kept doing strange things, crashing randomly etc and gradually getting worse with random errors etc until eventually, no boot at all after months of me wondering what the heck...

Turns out my cat was pissing on CPU... I regret watching terminator 2 CPU scene with him but we have come to an agreement. I feed him all the time and he no pee on PC

Also cat now understand, life has value but pee on PC and life does not have so much value.

Everyone lived happily ever after - the ÂŁ300 bill.

Just quit messing with it. Buy a new SSD and swap the old hard drive out. Set it aside. Download the latest windows 10 ISO on another computer and burn it to disk/usb and reinstall windows 10 on your computer. It will self activate. Reload your programs. Take the old hard drive and install it into one of these or something simular:
External drive enclosure
Hook that to your laptop and copy your files to your new operating system.

Its the quick and easy option that leaves the old data/os still sitting there you you can try and get it back at some point and exactly what i would recommend.

If windows installs and is happy on the new drive then you know the old drive is probably fubar'd and really you should just get a caddy for it to pull off any data you want then take it to the range and give it some loving before recycling it.

If the drive is dying then the more you use it to try and limp it on the more chance anything important is going to get destroyed and you can then end up having to need specialists to recover it and thats a hell of a lot more than a cheap drive from the local computer shop.
