*shrugs* is it really any different than painting the US as the reason for every ill in the world?

Yea in a perfect world we would cover what we did right as well as what we did wrong.... its not perfect.

PersonallyI feel bad for any kid that has to go through public school.

Can you imagine if a democratic president had come up with something called "Patriotic Education"? You all would lose your goddamn minds, and you'd be right to be extremely suspicious.

It figures that Leftists here are not in favor of this.
God forbid the history of the greatest country on the planet is taught.
Oops I used the word “God”, that should set them off as well.

greatest country hahahahahahaha

the country that allows millions to die every year because they are afraid of socialised care, the same country that has mass shootings

the only thing the usa is good at is propaganda and death

Today we have more good news related to wiping out marxism and far-left/woke propaganda,

AKA objective reality.

“Patriotic Education” Seriously. This is nothing but state sponsored propaganda. And you all are cheering on government brainwashing, simply because it favors the political party you’ve been tricked into believing is working in your best interest.

I know, right? How dare the current administration push this thing about educating our kids about FREEDOM and LIBERTY and the pursuit of happiness, and how all of that got started.

It's just terrible!

you know why they call it the american dream, because you have to be asleep to believe it

What is "patriotic education" ?

Sounds a bit Orwellian.

I think it is meant to offset the cultural Marxism so prevalent in today’s education system. Nothing is more Orwellian than Communism.

George Orwell would disagree, being a lifelong Trotskyite: "Every line of serious work that I have written since 1936 has been written, directly or indirectly, against totalitarianism and for democratic socialism".

Still, if you believe in "Cultural Marxism", that might be too nuanced for you.

me too... i learned all about how the founders were slave holding racists and the constitutions was only written for rich white land owners, all about the destructive nature of capitalism, and the fairness of socialism too.

Because the founders didn't own slaves and the constitution was not framed by and for rich white land owners?

I won't bother with the last two because they're nonsense.

Fair. I will say, though, my 11 year old is not really equipped with the necessary tools for critical analysis of US history, understanding the nuances of where historical records originate from (primary sources vs secondary sources), unwrapping biases of sources, and generally deep diving into controversial corners of our nation's history. These are topics that belong, if not in the final years of HS, certainly are fair game in a college education.

So what are you saying? Do the jingoistic thing in grammar/middle school and hopefully let them unravel that if they go to college?

Ah, I get now; you must not have children, or they are older and had already passed through the schools system.

How is refraining from teaching kids that Christoper Columbus was a genocidal, murdering, racist considered "jingoism"? You should hear what the children are "taught" about Trump, but you seem to exhibit symptoms of low-grade TDS, so you'd likely applaud that.

Primary and secondary school children should be taught the most objective history possible, and that should not include any politicized B.S., left leaning ~or~ right leaning.

You like to assume things, it's funny.

Oh, and on Columbus, my family is Italian and we couldn't give two s***s about that guy. Must be the TDS my mother has who voted for Trump. Reeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeee.

Schools should be neutral in this regard, teaching both the good and the bad of a country.

If you want to see what "patriotic" teaching in schools looks like go to red China. That isn't going to end well.

Also, what's patriotic to a big city northerner like Trump isn't necessarily the same to a southerner.

Leftists dont need to know about America while they are busy kneeling for China, I hope he closes all of the Confusion schools after the election too. I have a feeling 250 will be celebrated by peace in the world and the total abandonment of communism and it's evils, even if we have to defund free lunches and use the money to air drop small arms into the Uigher concentration camps.

See this is why American history needs to be taught in schools. You think you have a gotcha moment because you dont understand US history.

The ballamy salute was named after Francis Bellamy he wrote the pledge of allegiance in 1892. The nazis did not start using it until 1923 in large part because of the bellamy salute. The italians in 1919 started using it to show respect for their flag. S

However in 1942 it gets changed to placing hand over heart mostly because the Nazis appropriated and destroyed part of US history.

Umm … duh, but if they teach the U. S. Constitution, as originally composed, that is anathema to government brainwashing. The Constitution, not unique among such documents in history, is about INDIVIDUAL liberty. It isn't about any particular 'political party'. In fact, the document is A-POLITICAL.

It merely lays a fair foundation upon which political parties (sic) can compete, while holding government power and over-reach in check.

Italians still use it... its called the roman sallute. Nations that worship Roman and Greek culture use it in some form of wierd power thing. Will they teach that in american history?

Exactly what is needed, nothing whatsoever wrong with teaching about the achievements of your home nation.
I think it is a great move for americas schools and the education of americas children.
Im English myself, just for the record.

Of course not. It was tainted by a certain political group...

The Roman salute has ties back to some of the earliest known types of 'fascist' states, in Rome.

Which I never understood why the Nazi's used it, since Rome used Germanic peoples as slaves, and a money laundering war machine.

What does this even mean? And how would it happen? The President doesn't even have the power to do just about anything about state education. Sounds like BS meant to gin up his support.

And I don't know how many members here have been out of high school for less than a decade, but that education is not really biased. They leave nasty things out and gloss over the more despairing parts actually, as someone pointed out on page one here. But it's not false, it's not misleading and it's definitely not anti-American. There's nothing wrong with it in terms of how "American" it is. Actually, by hiding the bad parts many kids grow distrustful and apathetic. And the teachers haven't the energy or the time deviate from this curriculum. Professors do.

The only real bias you will find is in college educators, but it's not hard to tell which of your professors have a strong opinion and to judge if it finds its way into their teachings or not. Whether or not you go along with what they think is at that point your decision as an adult. Is President Trump saying he will bring professors back in line? Is he saying he's going to reign in high school teachers? Elementary? Is he saying he's just gonna add an extra civics class or something? This could be North Korea mode, this could be innocent, or this could be a campaign "promise." I'm guessing option three since we were given zero details.
