True love of man and woman in cinema

Now any movie is accompanied by quite frank love scenes that should inspire us with standards of love. Sometimes these scenes balance on the verge of eroticism and even pornography. They are trying to replace spiritual close connection and love in our minds with simple primitive sex.

But this was not always and not everywhere. I want to give you, dear members of the ATS forum, an example in cinema, when love is shown incomparably without explicit scenes.

In the 70s (1973), a series of 12 episodes of “17 Moments of Spring” was released in the USSR, which talked about the Soviet illegal intelligence officer, who held senior positions in the German Reich, the SS Standartenfuhrer von Stirlitz, the Russian intelligence officer Maxim Isaev.

The episode takes place before World War 2 in Germany. Soviet diplomats take Isaev’s wife to Germany and "accidentally" a Russian diplomat brings her to a cafe where "completely by accident" he drinks von Stirlitz coffee. Spouses meet with their eyes and between them to the stunning music comes an act of love between spouses who have not seen each other for more than 15 years. A wonderful sound range and a mute piercing meeting of glances bring this scene to a number of world cinema masterpieces. No words, no translation needed.

Director didn't know that you always sit facing the door when you have the table against the wall.

The guy left the girl alone to get a shot and came back, and the other guy didn't take advantage of the moment.

There is someone actually playing the piano, you can see him when the couple leaves.

Facial expressions where a key in those days.

Lighting a cigarette in the right moment used to add drama to the scene.

But seriously, in love, self-sacrifice is the main component. Or have we forgotten how to love?

Thanks, I would never have known about that scene otherwise.

The acting was superb.

I think the ancient Greeks had it right, having several words for several different types of love. We just call all the different types by the same word. Clearly sexual love is not the same as a close soul bond.

Best films are from say, 1940 to 1975. Perhaps 1980.
I especially like French New Wave of the 60s, and also the Korean Wave of the early 2000's.

Who are ''they'', the makers of movies? I would say that it is not the makers of movies but rather the weakening of authoritarian censorship that is waning. Back in the early days of American cinema they were quite loose with the sex until the Christian censors took over and put all kinds of restrictions on film making. There was even a point where in movies, a married couple had to sleep it two beds instead of one.
