I love music.

When im asked what kind of music i like the answer is always 'good music'. Im not stuck on one genre.
Now this video im posting is a cover of the classic Simon & Garfunkel song 'Sound of Silence'.

Im also of the belief that the classics shouldnt be touched unless the cover is at least as good as, if not better than the original. Hard to do i know.

But i think this is at least as good as the original

Volume up

I give you the band 'Disturbed, 'The Sound of Silence'

In my opinion very few people have the angelic quality of Art Garfunkel's voice.

I always liked Art's voice over Paul"s although they were great when they harmonized together.

Very few have the power/range/control of David Draiman.

I have played this for many ppl of many different tastes, and it, almost universally, causes goose bumps or tears.

To much bass in my opinion if you want range check out Shawn Phillips he has a 6 octave range in his voice.

I take it you are basing the bass comment on this example?

Have you listened to any other works by disturbed? I realize metal isn't for everyone, and I can't make a steady diet of it myself, but his voice has much more range than this particular song allowed, given the context.

Granted, he is no Freddy Mercury, but who is?

Not at all he just to much of a baritone voice for me, like in my first post Art has a better sounding voice for the song.

Fantastic cover of a classic and haunting song. Clear voice with a lot of power.

I did come across one cover of this song a while ago that was awesome. i am not sure who sung it, tried searching for it. He was a big guy, black hair, think it might of been in Scotland, maybe? Had some opera training, knocked me down. Powerful set of lungs.

My son is musically inclined.
He had never heard any Disturbed songs before a few months ago when I played the song in the OP for him.
He was impressed.
Then I played 'Down with the Sickness' for him.
He had trouble believing that it was done by the same artists.

Each to their own! Personally I prefer deep bass so not so keen when the video in the OP shoots up the scale. Nevertheless a good version.

The sound of silence...it should've remained that way that was a woeful cover, from the band that only brought you down with the sickness because the frontman screamed like a chimp during the chorus.

This is how you do a cover, it helps when you get original singer on board.

It would seem Simon was OK with it.

Seems a bit harsh, I thought it was a pretty decent rendition of The Sound of Silence. Coincidentally I recently came across a nice solo piano rendition of The Sound of Silence by Kodi Lee. For those unaware of who Kodi is, he was the AGT winner last year, he's blind and autistic which gives him an almost pitch perfect sense of hearing.

His first performance on AGT was amazing imo:

The original by Simon and Garfunkel was totally soulless. The whole debate of the Disturbed cover, too much bass, solo singer, no harmonising with another singer, total and utter BS.
The reason why it's far and above the better version than the original is the feeling, the emotion that aught to have been in the original. THAT'S why it brings people to tears.

Wow, never heard his voice before or his story, thank you for bringing it to my attention, as a parent of an autistic child I can relate to the trials and tribulations of his wonderful mother

Thank you Kodi for being you!!

IDK I remember liking Disturbed in the 90s

But they've become cringey for me, just like Korn and Linkin Park.

I honestly change the station when their version comes on.
