As a landscape photographer I doubt Abhijit Patil he measured it by himself. No idea where he got that number. It's the first I hear about it.
From what I remember to measure the size is pretty complicated, different methods are used(with different results) infrared spectroscopy is one them I believe. Can't say for sure, this is definitely not my area so I could be completely wrong.

For those wondering about the actual size of the comet itself:

The exact size of the icy rock isn't known, but it's likely to be only a few miles across with a much larger atmosphere.

The comet’s atmosphere measures five times the physical size of Jupiter and about half the size of the Sun

Small comet, LARGE atmosphere.

Where am I looking in the sky? West Coast US.

Also I’d never seen anything like a planet webbed by a constellation last night. Intriguing. Thank you!

North-West
Coordination are RA/Dec 7h26m14s / +68º08'59.1'' as of tonight
It's not visible with the naked eye though, even through the telescope I couldn't see a thing but I also have a photographic scope, with a good visual telescope you might get something.

Sadly, many do - hard to understand why this comet could possibly be doom-worthy though!

I was so close to pulling the trigger on my long-awaited telescope. Hopefully by late April I'll feel comfortable letting loose some cash.

Probably something along the lines of "We're still seeing it through the atmosphere when looking through the telescope, so I'm not sure what you mean by that".

But then I might be wrong too, so lets see!

Maybe a silly question but i am curious. How does a small icy rock a few miles across get an atmosphere so large? Is this a normal thing?

Unless he has a rocket capable of leaving the atmosphere I’m assuming these images were taken from the ground through the atmosphere.

The ccd camera likely has various filters which are then used later to represent true colour. I’m sure the OP can advise on how he managed to get a true colour image however I’d assume directly through the optics it appears black and white.

Btw amazing images OP. Considering the equipment you used that’s absolutely phenomenal.

The problem on ATS is size restriction. I have a few other videos and lots of Astro image. I can send you a link to my work if you wish.
