To some people orbiting Mars makes no difference, but for me, the interesting aspect of it all, is can it be done and at what cost, and price?

Which is probably why there hasn't been a manned orbital Mission of Mars yet.

I say we build the Mars Tiger shuttle and see if anyone is crazy enough to sign up to fly it.

can be done, take a barebones shuttle cut it up into 18-19 peices weighting the same and load them onto 18-19 proton-m heavy lifters, launch and then 6-months later reasemble.
costing roughy $1.795.500.000

Normal launch with expanded shuttle fuel capacity, exterior o2 tanks added to fuselage/wings

Actually, I think the money spent on Space would be better spent on Ocean Cleanup Machines and Recycling Centers throughout the different coasts along the shores of America.

after you have got the shuttle to leo you,ll still need to top up those tanks for 63 tons fuel per
ton of payload to escape leo for mars hto, but if your going only one way you could reduce it to 7 tons per ton or 3 tons if you want to be the first human pancake on mars

I must of got caught up watching that (NASA verified for accuracy) movie "The Martian" where it seemed like they had more than enough fuel to make it there, halfway back and there again.
