When in the hell did tips become something greater than a gratuity... a gift given which is over and above standard payment for a service?

This is why I'm a stingy bastard where tips are concerned.

I made 1500 a week as a barback when I was 18(and or 19-20 I forget). Barback isn't really a career but that is pretty good money for working 32 hours a week. I'm sure some would consider that a career.

I agree that that could be a career, especially for some where they are limited by many things (location, family, other obligations) and I think they would be happy to have that kind of income. I did that work as well at 2 places in High school and I loved it and did a great job. Wasn't a career for me, just work while in HS. Some may also take jobs like this to work up to a bar tending job at the company (or others) by getting experience, and in this case it is an entry level position into their career.

Some people are so arrogant and stuck up that they think only what they deem is worthy of being called a career, and anyone who doesn't work in those fields is a loser.

Another thing is that some people think money is the defining factor in success, but trying to tell them any different is about a useful as spitting and pissing into a hurricane wind.

Keep up that line of thinking buddy boy. Your type think you are holier than thou and I would put my skills against yours any day you like. Where do you live? Maybe we can compare out skill sets and see just how much of an "expert" you are at everything.

Yeah, you don't want to go there buckaroo. Trust me.

If this doesn't end in a bare chested oil wrestling match. I am losing all hope in life. Do you two really want me to lose all hope...Do you?

I agree with you but the problem is that the wages usually earned by people working those positions is really really low due to the tipping, and I think tipped employees actually prefer tips to higher wages

our society would crumble without these positions filled and all the luxuries they provide would vanish, they are apart of the greater good of society

like I said, moral implications have been totally decoupled from everything business related and it's all about economic models taught in books at school

Of course not, I just special ordered a cask of the finest Italian extra virgin olive oil that my 1%er money could buy.

ETA: Actually, that's a lie, I had my personal assistant do it for me after she picked up my dry cleaning and walked the dogs.

There are a lot of people on the low end of the pay scale that suck too, so I guess we should say that people suck in all pay ranges.

I agree, like I said I think it's a culture issue across the board, it's just more observable from one position to another rather than looking within

we have nothing that really brings us together in our, every man is island based society where everyone is seeking personal enrichment over all else. I would consider us to be in a technological dark age

I'm sure they do, much easier to avoid the taxman on cash tips.

That said, the tips, or the acceptance of automatically forking over a high percentage tip by customers, is what has driven those wages down.

yeah it has, it's exactly like social welfare benefits, they drive wages down as well whereas if we just cut this crap out people would be benefiting far more from a real open market

I agree in many ways. When I go to a pizza shop where I order at the counter (for takeout) and pay in cash and they have the tip jar out or the tip line on the CC receipt, I wonder how many people do this or if it is expected, especially when there is no service provided. I'll tip these guys if they keep the grill open past 9pm to make me a grilled sandwich (they close it at 9 but keep it open for me sometimes b/c I'm a regular) - in these situations, where they go above and beyond normal policy, I see a small tip as a way to say thank you, like if the sandwich is $7.50 I'll give them $1-1.50 b/c otherwise I'd have to get something I didn't want or go about 15 miles further where the grill is open till 10, so that is how I see it.

When it comes to tipping, there are some places where it is expected. Park your car yourself and walk (in the club parking lot) or drive up to the entrance and get a valet. Tipping is EXPECTED for this. Ask to have your car "cleaned" is not standard, it is something specifically asked for - cleaning supplies are paid for by valets - and a tip is EXPECTED when this is requested. It's a nice way to provide extra service to the members so they dont' have to wait at a dirty car wash for 45-60 mins while (mostly illegals) pick through your car and clean it. Our staff had no criminal record, were clean cut, spoke english and respected the vehicle much more than the local car washes. There is NOTHING in the member contract that states they are entitled to a cleaning, it is offered as a benefit and they work on GRATUITY or TIPS. It's better to get this done while playing 18 holes or a few games of tennis, than some shady car wash were things disappear inside the car. How can you not see that tipping is part of this process?

Are you the type that also doesn't tip the taxi driver or sky-cap at the airport after the unload/load your 15 pieces of 70lb luggage, express check in your luggage, fill out your claim tickets, etc? I guess these guys are just minimum wage workers as well and need to get a career. No reason to tip them even though they are paid a low amount specifically b/c it is to be off-set by tips for their service.

Some people you just can';t teach.

how many service jobs have you had where you receive tips or at least where co-workers receive tips.

So are exotic dancers supposed to dance for free and not supposed to tip them as well? I'll bet you are real popular with them as well.

If people really wanted a living wage.

They'd tell the state to stop taking half their earned income.

Income tax comrades!
