This one is tough too. Ruska v Espania.

I wonder if Spain has the legs. This should be as good as yesterday’s matches!

1-1 Full time , this one could go to penalties unless Spain can get through the 11 man defense of Russia.

Can't see Spain losing this.

And the award for the most boring game of the tournament so far goes to Spain v Russia.

wow... what a borefest that was. All Spain were doing were passing the ball around and all Russia were doing was ball watching. Diego Costa could have taken a book with him to read.

Terrible game but drama at the end. Russia through to the last 8.
So so happy to see Spain knocked out. The brand of football that Barca and Spain have brought through over the last few years is so boring, it's great to see it fail. Good for the hosts to be still in the competition.

Germany, Spain, Argentina, Portugal are all out... and Holland and Italy never even made it. Wow.

1 - 1 in the first five!

Full ninety. Off to extra time.

Yet another game where D is not figured out. Croatia looks stunned, which is not a good sign. Especially as the Danes push up the pitch.

Full beer. Thunderbirds are circling around. Salad dressing is mixed! Let’s go Sunday!!

Sunday July 1st Results

2nd Round KO: Russia 1(4)-1(3) Spain

Russia win after a penalty shootout.

This was as huge a shock as the Germans going out earlier. The Russians defended for almost the whole of the game and scored both goals in the game. Russian defender Boris Yeltsin put the ball into his own net after a free kick.

Spain passed and passed the ball but rarely threatened the Russian goal. Then, from a rare Russian corner kick, Gerard Pique's outstretched arm blocked a header from Artem Dzyuba. A penalty was awarded and Dzubya slotted home to put the Russians level at 1-1.

Spain continued their passive passing game into extra time and Russia continued to defend in depth. Penalty kicks ensued with Russian keeper Igor Akinfeev having the last laugh saving a Iago Aspas penalty with his outstretched boot. Spain now join other former World Cup winners Germany and Argentina on a flight home. Reports are that Moscow is running short of vodka.

2nd Round KO : Croatia 1(3)-1(2) Denmark

Croatia win after a penalty shootout.

This was far from a spectacular game. Croatia were not the side who had humbled Argentina 3-0 in the group games. Denmark were marginally better than the team that had sunbathed to a 0-0 with France. Denmark opened with a scruffy goal in the 1st minute and Croatia levelled at 1-1 through a Super Mario Mandzukic shot. The game then drifted into extra time. Croatia should have wrapped it up in extra time with a Luka Modric penalty kick. But Kasper Schmeicel saved it. He even saved two more in the penalty shootout but the Danes were woeful with their own penalty kicks and a bacon sandwich may not be awaiting them on their return to Copenhagen for probably not the best team in the World Cup.

Games still to come....

Everything comes to an end. There aren't really many new ideas in football to be honest just old ideas regurgitated. The seemingly modern 'false 9' forward dates back to the magical Magyars of the 50s. But as most of us weren't around then and very few of us read about ancient football tactics it seems new to us.

The Barca/Spanish style of the previous decade was originally very entertaining. Winning back possession within a few seconds with a swift counter attack was the first objective. If not possible then dropping back into defensive positions and a more patient build was the plan.

However somewhere along the way that became more of a possession for possession sake. Often boring the opposition to defeat and the fans to sleep. Or at least tiring them out by making them run around a lot chasing the ball. Possibly that stemmed from arrogance in later years. Having said that Spain are a better team than Russia. Far better. But they didn't seem to be able to step up a gear and really put them to the sword. That might be because they have had to replace their manager on the eve of the tournament and that some of their star names are past their peak.

Haha I am glad you are enjoying it. Even though early morning drinking is not a good habit to get into/

The games today weren't of the quality of yesterday. Yet they presented an absorbing drama because we all love the penalty kicks when it doesn't involve our own teams.

The unpredictability of this World Cup has certainly made it an exciting one so far.

Agree with that. As an Arsenal fan I've witnessed the same journey into boring and pointless football, so much so I ended up not renewing my season ticket. Watching Arsenal is like watching paint dry, except without the utility. Perhaps things will change now with a new manager, but it helps that the style is shown to be vulnerable to teams that are actually nowhere near as good. The amount of times Arsenal lost over the last 10 years against poor opposition having have 60-70% possession is staggering.

England threw the Belgium match to get an easier route to the final.

I mean, we all agree with that, don't we?

Sure sign of a team with no confidence. You are either best in the world or not, you can't fluke your way to victory.

The rest of the competition I'm enjoying.

No , the game wasn't important to us qualifying for the next round so Gareth gave the other members of the team a chance to play in the World Cup and perhaps impress the manager , as it happens Belgium won by a bloody good goal so fair play to them.

Sure sign of a team with no confidence.

Not watched any of the England games then ?
This team is more confident than any England team I've seen since Euro 96 , all they need now is a good performance tomorrow.

Pssst ... it's coming home.
