James Dolan, co-creator of SecureDrop, has tragically passed away at age 36

 James Dolan—one of the co-creators of SecureDrop took his own life over the holidays. He was 36.

In 2012, James worked with Aaron Swartz and journalist Kevin Poulsen to build the original prototype of SecureDrop, the open source whistleblower submission system, which was then called DeadDrop.

In January 2013, Aaron Swartz himself committed suicide as the US government was attempting to prosecute him for violating the Computer Fraud and Abuse Act related to allegedly copying academic articles from JSTOR. SecureDrop was an unrelated side project he was working on at the time.

At that point, James was literally the only person in the world who knew all the ins and outs of the system.

So it seems like another one of the creators of securedrop has committed suicide. I remember the Aaron Swartz case and there seemed to be some suspicions his hanging suicide was maybe not actually suicide.

The article doesn't mention how Jason died but does mention he had a history of PTSD from service in Iraq. It may just be a sad case of too much depression and stress but it seems kind of suspicious that both of the main creators of this project have died by suicide.

He was dead dropped alright.... Dropped dead. More accurately, suicided.

Though I would normally think that there should have been more to it. I mean, the product is already out. Why kill him after the fact instead of before? Unless, there was something more coming out, or supposed to come out? Usually people get suicided to stop them from doing something, not because they've already done it.

It mentions in the article that he had probably the most in depth knowledge of the system out of anyone alive and taught the people working at the Free Press Foundation how to install, run and maintain it. He also used to travel and help organizations set up the system for themselves and according to the article was the one that really worked on the security aspect of it.

Not likely. Usually the number one reason for suicide'ing someone is the age old "dead men tell no tales".

Very sad loss. RIP. If he did it himself, was probably harassed so much he couldn't take it anymore. Similarly speculated as to what happened with Aaron Swartz.
