No, you don't have to accept them. They automatically show up when someone adds you and you will get a PM to notify you that someone has added you.

It is possible that if bad things persist after you turn it off, then you most likely have malware overloading some of your resources.
A huge amount of active cookies increase your likelyhood of being infected with something.

Get SuperAntiSpyware and complete scan.
Get Gould's Cleanup4.5.2, run it stock default.
Just a suggestion.

It's not your fault...the design of the user interface of this site has much left to be desired.

For example--and no cheating--do you go to "profile" or "account" to change your avatar image? Which one to update your location? Which one to see your wall?

I'm sure that YOU may know the answers since you recently explored the site, but the answers are counter-intuitive to the way that they are named and the structure of the site in general. Updating everything would be a TON of work, though, and cost, so I understand why it hasn't happened.

click "account" which takes you to your "account settings" page

scroll to bottom

make sure your "avatars" setting isn't set to hide your desktop avatars
