Exactly those tracks are said to be new solely for Amtrak. I'd assume it wouldn't be poured cement, that Antifa social media evidence claims, on the tracks being effective at all to derail due to the rain and cold. As well as the testing Amtrak has been doing prior to this one running on those tracks-dunno if they did it Sunday though.

That picture is the lead engine sitting on the expressway. It hit something major before getting there just look at the front of it.

Strange unless it did a 360 and ended upright?? Naah

12 of the 13 cars came off the track. To me that took a huge force!
This is one of the strangest derailments I've seen. Trains went in every direction instead of "stacking" and the last one stays on the tracks????

Mayor warned about new Amtrak line before derailment

The mayor of a city near the scene of Monday’s deadly train crash in Washington state warned earlier this month that the start of high-speed service was bound to end in disaster.

During a Dec. 4 meeting of the Lakewood City Council, Mayor Don Anderson blasted plans by the Washington State Department of Transportation to let Amtrak trains travel through the city at up to 79 mph without first installing overpasses or other means of keeping motor vehicles and pedestrians away from the tracks.

“Come back when there is that accident, and try to justify not putting in those safety enhancements, or you can go back now and advocate for the money to do it, because this project was never needed and endangers our citizens,” Anderson said, according to video posted online by KOMO Radio.

Hmmm... what should we make of that?

That the mayor's views have been sadly vindicated.

Ouch. 80 mph, train cars tumbled off the train trestle onto a crowded freeway, during rush hour.

80 MPH??

State law mandates a maximum of 50 MPH for all trains in Washington St.

Speed limits are at grade crossings in unincorporated areas.

(UTC) in Washington state generally has the authority to set speed limits at all grade crossings in unincorporated areas and in all cities, except those where populations are greater than 100,000 (such as Seattle, Tacoma, or Vancouver, WA). However, federal regulations preempt the state and cities from setting speed limits except where unique local safety conditions exist. As a result, the UTC can set speed limits only where such conditions warrant a deviation from Federal Railroad Administration track safety standards.
WSDOT

Ok. I see. Pretty safe to say 80 MPH will be history after this screw-up.

It wasn't at a crossing so it's still in question on what happened. The video should come out in a few days if something was on the tracks. Engine damage says something on tracks as tall as the engine but ?????

Rumors the tracks were "monkeyed with"

Whose rumors?

It could be FAKE NEWS.
Don't try to spread a rumor without something to back it up.
Because that's just FAKE NEWS!

I'm going to mirror this, by adding that the only report that has any credibility to it, stated that they felt like the train hit a truck or something on the track. This is currently being investigated, but I haven't heard a thing about tampered tracks. At least nothing locally, which is where I'm getting my news from.

With this being said, watch out for Daesh popping up in a day or so saying that they were behind this event too. It's all trash news. The train may have just hit the turn going too fast and jumped the track, we will have to wait till more information comes out about this.

The Islamic State would have been "lalalalallalalalalalalalal" ing this one to anyone that could hear them since they're not really in a good place right now and any fatalities of infidels would probably look good.

The OP is spreading rumors without sources. And as our President says, that's FAKE NEWS.

I was mirroring your statement, just so you know we're in agreement on this.

I-5 south in that area is going to be closed down till tomorrow morning at the earliest, so by mid-day tomorrow we should have some evidence to support what happened. We may not know why, but we'll know what. Let's hope this leads to a "how not" for the future. This speed run is sorely needed in this area, and was going to be a great way to reduce traffic issues in Washington state. Hopefully this doesn't happen again due to the same issues (whatever they may be)

RIP. Looks pretty straightforward. Train takes an awkward curve at too high a speed, front engine rolls down ditch into road, some carriages follow whilst others buckle against the bridge.

That turn does not look friendly (or even safely engineered) at all.

Not dissimilar to the Spain derailment, or the London tram derailment, both were excessive speed over tight curves. And what was that other one, outside of New York or such on that long curve, NY Metro also in December, of 2013. 2015 Philadelphia train derailment excessive speed on a curve... the list goes on. Not saying it's the case here but overall it seems the train industry seems to have a problem a bit like the aviation industry used to, schedules dictated by profit margins pushing too hard and putting lives at risk.

I was sitting in my semi at the loves in Tacoma just off the I 5 when it happened. A bunch of drivers heard it. But I was kick'n it blasting Deep Purple.

I don't think the act of reporting that allegations exist is a falsity in itself.

As of right now the death toll has been reduced to three. I-5 is still closed. The speed limit is indeed 79 mph prior to a curve that was coming up in a quarter mile, but RIGHT NOW there is no evidence the train was speeding and RIGHT NOW there is no indication of any sort of sabotage. The detours are really bad. One is through Fort Lewis. The other is from Tumwater through Shelton up Highway 3, down SR 16 across the Narrows (a toll bridge) and back to I-5. That's almost 100 miles in detour on mostly two-lane SR 3. I know that road well. That's a tough commute.

Definitely nothing fake about it. I'm just glad my dispatch was on top of # and sent me east out the 18 to the 90.
