Jim Nabors Dies: ‘Gomer Pyle’ Star Was 87

Jim Nabors, who gave popular culture its most enduring image of a wide-eyed, good-natured if none too bright hayseed in a character whose very name – Gomer Pyle – would become synonymous with lovable rube, died Thursday in Hawaii. He was 87.

Is it getting a little dusty in here, or is it just me.

RIP - You were great! Always will be!

This one still makes me cry... *sob* When he starts to come out of his scratchy voice I get goose bumps every time.

He was also a singer. He sang (past tense, already,
) the song "Back Home" at the Indy 500 every year.

I seem to recall him covering Go Tell It on the Mountain.

Great voice! Now silenced.

RIP

He was a good singer.
He did do gospel music, and I remember a recording of 'Man of La Mancha' around our home when I was an adolescent in the early 1970's.

My second post of videos has the song you're thinking of at the raceway.

Enjoy.

RIP SHAZAM!

Ah, it was bittersweet to run across the very common typo/mispelling "suprise" today.

My coworker and I always used to get a chuckle out of it by quoting Gomer:

"Soo-prize, Soo-prize, Soo-prize!" Sometimes there was more and sometimes less /r/ there in the first syllable.

I've been watching a few of the old Gomer Pyle episodes on MeTV lately. He played a really good "fish out of water" character. When I was a kid, I loved him. Now, as an adult, I can identify more with Sgt. Carter.

RIP Jim Nabors.
