Ceremonies like these are seldom done for only one reason. Messages of all sorts are sent.

I do believe they are. Yes he did, and insulted them at the very start of his term. Slights like that are very rarely forgotten. They are patient and have watched the man. Chances are from day one, of opening a business in his name in China, along with becoming a political figure, the Chinese intelligence have developed a profile on the man, knowing who he is and what kind of a person he is. They probably have a work up on the man, that even we do not know.

They know enough to stroke his ego, to make him feel important and will use that to their advantage. In this negotiation that he is going to go into, he has lost and does not even know it.
