We've always known that Silicon Valley tech companies lean heavily to the left despite their greedy capitalist tendencies. Now it appears they are actively trying to scrub out white power/racist across various social media platforms. I think this is really going down a dangerous path.

Spotify Bans White Power Tracks

Amid the ongoing fallout from the violence that saw a civil rights activist killed, music subscription service Spotify began removing so-called white power music, flagged by the SPLC as racist “hate bands”. A Spotify spokesperson said: “Illegal content or material that favours hatred or incites violence against race, religion, sexuality or the like is not tolerated by us. Spotify takes immediate action to remove any such material as soon as it has been brought to our attention.

Of course, I am sure Spotify isn't banning music from hip hop artist that make liberal use of "cracker", white folks, peckerwoods, and advocate for violence as well... but of course, these are "revolutionary" groups.

I have mixed feelings about this because we've already seen how platforms like Youtube have been targeting conservative and alternative view points.

I've always been an advocate of free speech. Even speech I don't agree with. These types of moves are really ironic considering that in the early days of the net and being online, many of these white power groups were pioneers (along with porn).

The issue is always who becomes the arbiter of what is acceptable speech/music. Today, it is neo nazi rock groups. Tomorrow it is Public Enemy. Next thing you know, all we have is Justin Beiber.

Article also mentions how LinkedIn, Twitter, etc are getting in on banning anyone they deem unsavory...

The population reduction plan that TPTB have formed should be obvious when that happens.

Welcome to 1984! How soon before we see Fahrenheit 451 and the burning of books? How about the US flag, old Glory. How long before our own damn flag is outlawed?

Good, I am glad. Its a free country. They have every right not to support that kind of music. Its not as though the music is not still just a few clicks away, on another website. People can go elsewhere if that's what they are into.

When you shut them up all you are doing is infringing on freedom of speech.

I am guessing your one of those leftist guys who supports freedom of speech so long as you agree with what is being said and it doesn't upset you

They're doing music fans a favor, of all the times I had the misfortune of hearing neo-nazi music, simply put, it's absolutely awful, and this is before you even start with the lyrics.

Now, what should actually be banned, is the plastic pop crap that floods the airwaves, it's a threat to young people everywhere

A fearsome aspect of this is what happened in Germany in the lead up to the Nazis seizing power. With strict ordinance against incitement to class struggle (Weimar criminal code 130), or against religious insult (Weimar criminal code 166), the Nazis were jailed on numerous occasions in the years leading up to their petty revolution. Der Stürmer, the anti-Semitic rag of Julius Streicher, whom was later hung in Nuremberg for “inciting hatred”, was either confiscated or taken to court on no less than 36 separate occasions in the decade leading up to 1933. The paper was even the subject of five litigations over the course of 11 days in the late twenties.

According to Hitler, it was this persecution that made them stronger.

You seem to have totally forgotten that, for years, our shirts were ripped off our backs because you did not approve of the color.

Let us stay within the realm of reality! Your persecution has made us strong!

When the voices of hate are censored, they tend to go underground where they fester, gain steam, and in the case of the Nazis, sometimes seize power.

The opposite of Nazi is not "the left". The opposite of Nazis are Not-Nazis. This insistence on labeling anything critical towards white nationalism as liberal is why so many damned conservatives are sympathizing with Nazis!

It's not a left/right issue. It's a Nazi/Not-Nazi issue. Claiming it's partisan makes you part of the problem.

While I don't disagree that these white power groups are scum, you are being somewhat of a simpleton. See, Spotify says: race, religion, sexuality...

I guess half the hip hop groups I grew up on could probably be banned on the sexuality aspect alone with anti-LBGT verses alone (whether really intentioned or not). I.e., accusing someone of being gay.

Music is a powerful medium of expression. I guess Spotify has the right not to play what they choose not to play. It is a slippery slope when they allow vile lyrics of other genres to glorify violence and bigotry, but condemn it when it comes from other groups.

Next thing you know, Elvis will be banned. He sang the most beautiful version of Dixie I have ever heard, and the flute played by the black musician toward the end is haunting.

They won't allow you to embed it, but if you go to You Tube

www.youtube.com... and listen, it's absolutely beautiful.

My quote has nothing to do with nazi / not nazi. Are you denying the Silicon Valley leans left politically? The point is they are banning stuff they disagree with. I don't care if they are left or right personally, as I am against censoring whether it is the Christian right getting sand in their panties over porn or the leftist claiming everything is racist.

If you are going to have free speech, then all speech must be protected even if you disagree with it or find it vile.

If you don't like, don't listen to it.

I remember buying 2 Live Crew Cds as a teen when Tipper Gore (Al Gore's Wife) was having orgasms over how raunchy they were resulting in a Supreme Court case and those stupid Parental Advisory stickers.

Yes, down the hole with them, and while they are down there, they can snatch up those rappers and record labels that keep promoting black on black violence to.

Hmmm one has to wonder though, why is gangsta rap so prevalent and promoted?

Private corporation. If you disagree with it's policies, vote with your pocket book and take your business elsewhere. That's how it's supposed to work.

Just to be clear, the First Amendment applies to restrictions that the Government can or cannot place on you a citizen. A private company is a whole different ball of wax when you agree to the terms of service when you sign up. A non government entity has the right to establish standards. Even here at ATS such community standards exist The issue of "Freedom of Speech" on ATS

Good.

Why should Spotify promote and pay money to 'white power' groups.
